How to Use

Dosage

For adults, the usual starting dose is 15 mg once daily; your doctor may adjust this, up to a maximum of 30 mg daily. For adolescents (13 years and older), the usual dose is 10 mg once daily, but your doctor may adjust this up to 30 mg daily.

Method

Take this medicine by mouth with water, with or without food, preferably at the same time each day. Swallow the tablet whole.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 30 mg.

  • Restlessness or inability to sit still
  • Constant urge to move (akathisia)
  • Uncontrolled twitching or writhing movements

  • Infrequent bowel movements or constipation
  • Indigestion
  • Nausea
  • Increased salivation

RARE
  • Changes in blood prolactin hormone levels
  • High blood sugar
  • Depression
  • Changed or increased sexual desire
  • Uncontrolled movements of the mouth, tongue, and limbs (tardive dyskinesia)
  • Muscle tone disorder causing writhing movements (dystonia)
  • Restless legs
  • Double vision
  • Light sensitivity of the eyes
  • Fast heartbeat
  • Drop in blood pressure when standing (dizziness, lightheadedness or fainting)
  • Hiccups
  • Decrease in white blood cells and platelets
  • Allergic reactions (e.g., swelling, itching, hives)
  • New or worsening diabetes, ketoacidosis, or coma
  • Low sodium in blood
  • Loss of appetite, weight loss or gain
  • Suicidal thoughts or attempts
  • Aggressiveness, agitation, nervousness
  • Severe muscle stiffness, fever, and other symptoms (neuroleptic malignant syndrome)
  • Seizures (epilepsy)
  • Serotonin syndrome (symptoms include feeling happy, drowsy, clumsy, fever)
  • Speech disorders
  • Eyes fixed in one position
  • Sudden unexplained death, life-threatening irregular heart rhythm, heart attack
  • Slow heart rate
  • Blood clots in veins (e.g., in legs, potentially leading to lung problems)
  • High blood pressure
  • Fainting
  • Food entering windpipe (risk of pneumonia)
  • Muscle spasms in vocal cords
  • Pancreatitis, difficulty swallowing, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, stomach upset
  • Liver failure, hepatitis, yellowing of skin and eyes
  • Abnormal liver test results
  • Rash, photosensitivity of the skin, hair loss, excessive sweating
  • Severe allergic reactions (DRESS syndrome)
  • Breakdown of muscle cells (risk of kidney problems), muscle pain, stiffness
  • Involuntary urination, difficulty urinating
  • Withdrawal symptoms in newborns (if mother used medicine during pregnancy)
  • Prolonged and/or painful erection
  • Body temperature regulation issues or fever
  • Chest pain
  • Swelling of hands, ankles, or feet
  • Changes in blood sugar or HbA1c levels
  • Compulsive behaviors (e.g., gambling addiction, increased sex drive, compulsive shopping or eating, wandering)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to aripiprazole or any other ingredients.
  • Tell your doctor right away if you have thoughts of self-harm or suicide.
  • Discuss with your doctor if you have high blood sugar, diabetes (or family history), seizures, uncontrolled muscle movements, heart or circulation problems, stroke, blood clots (or family history), or a history of gambling problems.
  • Inform your doctor if you gain weight, develop new movement problems, experience severe drowsiness, have difficulty swallowing, or show signs of an allergic reaction.
  • If you are an elderly patient with dementia, tell your doctor if you have had a stroke.

  • Seek immediate medical help if you experience high fever, muscle stiffness, sweating, and a fast or irregular heartbeat (Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome).
  • Tell your doctor if you or your family notice unusual or uncontrolled behaviors, such as gambling addiction, binge eating, compulsive spending, or increased sex drive.
  • Be cautious if you experience drowsiness, low blood pressure when standing up, or balance problems, especially if you are elderly.
  • Avoid alcohol while taking this medicine.
  • Do not drive or operate machinery if this medicine causes dizziness or vision problems.
  • This medicine should not be given to children under 13 years of age.
