How to Use

Dosage

For adults and teenagers over 12 years: 250 mg to 2000 mg (1/2 to 4 tablets) per day. Your doctor will tell you the exact dose, usually two or three times a day, depending on the infection.

Method

Swallow the tablet(s) whole with water, with or after food. Do not chew them.

Important

The highest daily dose for adults is usually 2000 mg (4 tablets). Treatment should generally not last longer than 10 days.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Taste changes (e.g., metallic taste in mouth)
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Loss of appetite
  • Diarrhea
  • Stomach pain or pressure
  • Dark urine
  • Coated tongue or inflammation in the mouth
  • Sour burps
RARE
  • Headache, dizziness, drowsiness, trouble sleeping, seizures, or problems with coordination.
  • Skin reactions like rash, itching, hives, blisters, or skin redness.
  • Allergic reactions like skin redness, blisters, allergic runny nose, or red eyes.
  • Changes in blood cells (e.g., fewer white blood cells, red blood cells, or platelets).
  • Liver problems (e.g., inflammation, jaundice, increased liver enzymes).
  • Nerve problems like numbness, tingling in arms or legs, or brain issues (e.g., confusion, hallucinations, problems with movement, vision, or speech).
  • Kidney or bladder issues, like painful urination or bladder infections.
  • Inflammation of the pancreas, joints, or muscles.
  • Temporary vision changes (e.g., double or blurred vision).
  • Mental health changes (e.g., confusion, depression, irritability).
  • Drug fever (fever caused by the medicine).
  • Hearing problems, like ringing in the ears or hearing loss.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take Arilin if you are allergic to metronidazole or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Tell your doctor if you have kidney or liver problems, blood disorders, or any brain or nerve conditions.
  • Stop taking the medicine and see a doctor right away if you get severe, watery diarrhea.
  • Do not drink alcohol while taking Arilin, as it can make you feel very sick (flushing, nausea, vomiting, headache).
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, talk to your doctor before taking this medicine. It is usually not recommended during early pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
