How to Use

Dosage

The usual starting dose for adults is 600 mg daily. Your doctor may change the dose. Typically, the dose is 600-2400 mg daily.

Method

Take tablets with water, with or after a meal, twice a day at the same time. Tablets can be halved. For small children, tablets can be dissolved in water.

Important

Typically up to 2400 mg daily for adults. For children, the maximum dose is 46 mg per kg of body weight daily.

  • Severe blistering or widespread skin reactions (such as DRESS, AGEP, Lyell's syndrome, Stevens-Johnson syndrome)
  • Fever with severe skin reactions
  • Decreased consciousness
  • Muscle twitching
  • Worsening seizures (possibly due to low sodium levels)
  • Symptoms of hypersensitivity reaction (rash, fever, muscle and joint pain)
  • Red, patchy rash on face (lupus-like symptoms), with fatigue, fever, nausea, or loss of appetite
  • Flu-like symptoms with yellow skin or eyes (signs of liver inflammation)
  • Severe upper abdominal pain, vomiting, loss of appetite (signs of pancreatitis)
  • Irregular, very fast or slow heart rate
  • Weakening of bones (osteopenia, osteoporosis) and fractures

Important Warnings

  • Do not use this medicine if you are allergic to oxcarbazepine, eslicarbazepine, or any other ingredients.
  • Tell your doctor if you have had allergic reactions (like a rash) to carbamazepine or other medicines, as you might also be allergic to this medicine.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have kidney disease or severe liver disease.
  • Tell your doctor if you are taking water pills (diuretics).
  • Talk to your doctor if you have heart disease, shortness of breath, or swollen legs or feet.

  • Tell your doctor if blood tests have shown low sodium levels.
  • If you use hormonal birth control (e.g., birth control pills), this medicine can make it less effective. Use another birth control method as well.
  • Get immediate medical help or go to a hospital if you have a severe allergic reaction (e.g., swelling of face, lips, or throat, difficulty breathing, fever, or blistering rash).
  • Contact your doctor if you develop symptoms of liver inflammation, such as yellow skin or eyes.
  • Tell your doctor if your seizures become more frequent or worse.
  • Get immediate medical help if you have symptoms of blood disorders, such as fatigue, paleness, easy bruising, or frequent infections.
  • If you have thoughts of harming yourself or suicide, contact your doctor immediately.
  • Tell your doctor if your heart rate is unusually fast or slow.
  • Do not stop taking this medicine suddenly, as seizures may worsen. Always stop as advised by your doctor.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Reduce the dose in severe renal impairment. Numerous potential adverse effects, such as hyponatraemia, hematological changes and risk of hepatic injury. May increase the need for a vitamin D supplement. (updated 10.11.2025)
