How to Use

Dosage

The usual starting dose for adults, including elderly patients, is 600 mg of oxcarbazepine per day. For children, the dosage is calculated based on body weight.

Method

Swallow the tablets with a small amount of water during or after a meal. The tablets have a cross-score and can be divided into four equal 75 mg doses. For small children who cannot swallow tablets, they can be dissolved in water.

Important

For adults, the dose is generally between 600-2400 mg of oxcarbazepine per day. The maximum daily dose for children is 46 mg per kg of body weight per day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Fatigue, headache, dizziness, drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, double vision
  • Weakness, memory problems, difficulty concentrating, apathy, agitation, confusion, blurred vision, visual disturbances, constipation, diarrhea, abdominal pain, acne, hair loss, balance problems, weight gain, speech difficulties
  • Tremor, coordination difficulties, involuntary eye movements, anxiety, nervousness, depression, mood swings, rash
RARE
  • Muscle weakness, feeling cold (signs of underactive thyroid), falls
  • High blood pressure, hives
  • Swelling of lips, eyelids, face, throat or mouth with breathing, speaking or swallowing difficulties (signs of severe allergic reaction)
  • Rash and/or fever (DRESS-like reaction or AGEP)
  • Shortness of breath on exertion, paleness, chills, frequent feverish infections, sore throat, mouth ulcers, unusual bruising or bleeding, nosebleeds, red or bluish spots on skin or unexplained skin changes (signs of blood disorders)
  • Decreased consciousness, confusion, muscle twitching, or significant worsening of seizures (possible symptoms of low blood sodium)
  • Bone changes like osteopenia, osteoporosis, and fractures
  • Hypersensitivity reaction (rash, fever, muscle/joint pain)
  • Severe blistering skin/mucous membrane changes (Lyell's, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, erythema multiforme)
  • Facial reddish, blotchy rash with fatigue, fever, nausea, or loss of appetite (lupus-like symptoms)
  • Flu-like symptoms with yellowing of skin/eyes (liver inflammation)
  • Severe upper abdominal pain, vomiting, loss of appetite (pancreatitis)
  • Irregular, very fast or slow heart rate

Important Warnings

  • If you have previously had allergic reactions (like a rash) to carbamazepine or other medicines, as about 25% of people allergic to carbamazepine may also react to oxcarbazepine.
  • Inform your doctor if you have kidney or severe liver disease.
  • Tell your doctor if you are taking diuretics, have heart disease with shortness of breath or swelling, or if blood tests show low sodium levels.
  • If you are a woman using hormonal contraception (like birth control pills), Apydan 300 mg can make it less effective. Use an additional non-hormonal birth control method. Contact your doctor immediately if your periods become irregular or you experience spotting.
  • If you are of Han Chinese or Thai origin, you may be at higher risk for severe skin reactions. Your doctor may perform a blood test to check this before you start treatment.

  • If you develop an allergic reaction after starting Apydan 300 mg, such as swelling of lips, eyelids, face, throat, or mouth, sudden breathing difficulties, fever with swollen lymph nodes, or a rash. Seek urgent medical care.
  • If you develop symptoms of hepatitis (liver inflammation), such as yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes. Seek urgent medical care.
  • If your seizures become more frequent. This applies especially to children, but can also occur in adults. Seek urgent medical care.
  • If you develop symptoms of blood disorders, such as fatigue, shortness of breath on exertion, paleness, headache, chills, dizziness, frequent feverish infections, sore throat, mouth ulcers, unusual bruising or bleeding, nosebleeds, red or bluish spots on the skin, or unexplained skin changes. Seek urgent medical care.
  • A small number of people taking epilepsy medicines like Apydan 300 mg have had thoughts of harming themselves or committing suicide. If you have such thoughts, contact your doctor immediately.
  • If your heart rate is fast or unusually slow. Seek urgent medical care.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Reduce the dose in severe renal impairment. Numerous potential adverse effects, such as hyponatraemia, hematological changes and risk of hepatic injury. May increase the need for a vitamin D supplement. (updated 10.11.2025)
