How to Use

Dosage

The usual starting dose for adults is 100 mg per day.

Method

Take Apurin Sandoz without chewing, with plenty of fluids, after a meal, and at the same time each day. If taking more than one tablet or if experiencing stomach problems, you should divide the total dose throughout the day.

Important

The maximum daily dose for adults is 3 tablets (900 mg).

Possible Side Effects

  • Abnormal liver test results
  • Liver problems, such as hepatitis
  • Blood disorders (e.g., easy bruising, sore throat, or other signs of infection)
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Fever
  • Blood in urine
  • High cholesterol levels in blood
  • General feeling of being unwell or weakness
  • Weakness, numbness, unsteady legs, inability to move muscles (paralysis), or loss of consciousness
  • Headache, dizziness, drowsiness, or vision problems
  • Chest pain, high blood pressure, or slow pulse
  • Male infertility or erectile dysfunction
  • Breast enlargement (in both men and women)
  • Changes in bowel function
  • Changes in taste
  • Cataracts
  • Hair loss or discoloration
  • Depression
  • Lack of voluntary muscle coordination (ataxia)
  • Tingling, itching, prickling, or burning sensation in the skin (paresthesia)
  • Fluid retention and swelling, especially in the ankles (edema)
  • Abnormal glucose metabolism (diabetes)
  • Aseptic meningitis (symptoms include stiff neck, headache, nausea, fever, or altered consciousness)
  • Lichenoid skin rash (itchy, reddish or purplish rash and/or thread-like whitish-grey lines on mucous membranes)

Important Warnings

  • Do not use Apurin Sandoz if you are allergic to allopurinol or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have severe kidney problems (creatinine clearance less than 20 ml/min).
  • This medicine is not suitable for children weighing less than 45 kg.
  • If you get a rash or other severe skin symptoms (like peeling skin or blisters), stop taking allopurinol immediately and contact your doctor.
  • If you have cancer or Lesch-Nyhan syndrome, drink enough fluids to keep your urine diluted, as uric acid in urine may increase.

  • If you have kidney stones, they might become smaller and move into your urinary tract.
  • Avoid alcohol, especially beer, and foods high in purine (like organ meats and meat extract).
  • If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning a baby, ask your doctor for advice. Allopurinol is not recommended during breastfeeding.
  • This medicine might make you feel drowsy, dizzy, or have coordination problems. If so, do not drive or use machines.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C
