How to Use

Dosage

For adults, the usual starting dose is 1 tablet (100 mg) once a day. For children weighing at least 15 kg, the usual dose is 10 mg per kg of body weight daily, divided into 3 doses. Your doctor will adjust your dose as needed.

Method

Swallow the tablets whole with a glass of water, after a meal, at the same time each day. If you need to take more than 3 tablets daily or if you have stomach problems, your doctor may ask you to divide the total dose into smaller doses throughout the day.

Important

The maximum daily dose for adults is 9 tablets (900 mg). For children over 15 kg, the maximum daily dose is 4 tablets (400 mg).

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Rash
  • Increased levels of thyroid stimulating hormone in the blood
RARE
  • Severe allergic reactions including swelling of the face or throat, widespread rash with blisters or peeling skin, fever, joint pain, abnormal blood tests, or flu-like symptoms. Stop taking this medicine and seek immediate medical help.
  • Skin peeling, sores or tenderness in the lips and mouth
  • Feeling sick (nausea), throwing up (vomiting), diarrhea
  • Abnormal liver tests, liver problems like inflammation
  • Easily getting bruises or bleeding, sore throat, fever, or other signs of infection. This can be a sign of changes in your blood cells.
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Blood in your urine
  • High cholesterol levels in the blood
  • Feeling weak, numb, unsteady legs, inability to move muscles (paralysis), or loss of consciousness
  • Headache, dizziness, sleepiness, or vision problems
  • Chest pain (angina), high or low blood pressure, or slow pulse
  • Male infertility or erection problems
  • Breast enlargement in both men and women
  • Changes in normal bowel function
  • Changes in taste
  • Cataracts (clouding of the eye lens)
  • Hair loss or changes in hair color
  • Feeling depressed
  • Poor muscle coordination (ataxia)
  • Tingling, itching, prickling, or burning sensation in the skin (paresthesia)
  • Swelling due to fluid buildup (edema), especially in the ankles
  • Abnormal blood sugar control (diabetes)
  • Brain and spinal cord inflammation (aseptic meningitis) with symptoms like stiff neck, headache, nausea, fever, or confusion. Seek immediate medical help if this happens.
  • Itchy, red-purple rashes or white-grey lines on mucous membranes (lichenoid reaction)

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to allopurinol or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • If you are of Han Chinese, Thai, or Korean descent, you may have a higher risk of severe skin reactions. Stop taking this medicine and tell your doctor immediately if you develop a rash or other skin symptoms.
  • Tell your doctor if you have liver or kidney problems, as your dose may need to be adjusted and you will be monitored closely.
  • Inform your doctor if you have heart problems or high blood pressure and are taking diuretics (water pills) or ACE inhibitors.
  • Do not start taking this medicine during an acute gout attack.

  • Tell your doctor if you have thyroid problems.
  • If you have cancer or Lesch-Nyhan syndrome, you must drink plenty of fluids to dilute your urine and prevent uric acid levels from rising too high.
  • If you have kidney stones, this medicine can make them smaller, which might cause them to pass into your urinary tract.
  • If you are taking medicines for cancer (like 6-mercaptopurine or azathioprine), your doctor will adjust your dose and monitor your blood closely, as combining these medicines can increase serious blood problems.
  • Contact your doctor immediately if you notice unexplained bruising, bleeding, fever, or sore throat, as these could be signs of serious blood problems.
  • Avoid alcohol, especially beer, and foods high in purines (like organ meats and meat extracts), as these can worsen your condition.
  • Not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Consult your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to be, or breastfeeding.
  • This medicine can make you feel sleepy, dizzy, or have coordination problems. Do not drive or operate machinery if you experience these effects.

Category C
