Appizmit is a medicine that contains omeprazole, which belongs to a group of drugs called proton pump inhibitors, and it works by reducing the amount of acid your stomach makes.

How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will determine your dose based on your condition and age. For adults, typical doses range from 10 mg to 40 mg once daily, or 20 mg twice daily when given with antibiotics for certain infections. For children, the dose is calculated based on their weight and age.

Method

Take this medicine by mouth, preferably in the morning on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes before a meal. For infants, use the provided dosing pipette to measure the correct amount. It can also be given via feeding tubes (NG or PEG).

Important

The maximum daily dose depends on your specific condition and is determined by your doctor, but typically does not exceed 40 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Headache
  • Diarrhea, stomach pain, constipation, or gas
  • Feeling sick (nausea) or throwing up (vomiting)
  • Small, harmless bumps in the stomach (benign stomach polyps)
RARE
  • Swelling in your feet and ankles
  • Trouble sleeping (insomnia)
  • Dizziness, a feeling of pins and needles, or drowsiness
  • Spinning sensation (vertigo)
  • Changes in blood tests that show how your liver is working
  • Skin rash, bumpy rash (hives), or itchy skin
  • Hip, wrist, or spine fracture
  • Feeling generally unwell or lacking energy
  • Changes in blood cells, such as fewer white blood cells or platelets, which can lead to weakness, bruising, or increased infections
  • Low sodium levels in your blood, which can cause weakness, vomiting, or muscle cramps
  • Feeling restless, confused, or depressed
  • Changes in taste
  • Vision problems, such as blurred vision
  • Sudden wheezing or shortness of breath (bronchospasm)
  • Dry mouth
  • Inflammation inside your mouth
  • Fungal infection in the gut (candida)
  • Liver problems, including jaundice (yellow skin/eyes), dark urine, and tiredness
  • Hair loss
  • Skin rash after sun exposure
  • Joint or muscle pain
  • Severe kidney problems (interstitial nephritis)
  • Increased sweating
  • More serious changes in blood cells, including a severe lack of white blood cells (agranulocytosis)
  • Aggression
  • Seeing, feeling, or hearing things that are not there (hallucinations)
  • Severe liver problems leading to liver failure or brain inflammation
  • Erythema multiforme (a severe skin reaction)
  • Muscle weakness
  • Enlarged breasts in men
  • Inflammation in the intestine (causing diarrhea)
  • Low magnesium levels in the blood (with long-term use), causing tiredness, muscle twitching, confusion, seizures, dizziness, or fast heartbeat. This can also lead to low potassium or calcium.
  • Skin rash with possible joint pain

Important Warnings

  • Stop taking Appizmit and call your doctor right away if you get a severe allergic reaction or serious skin problems like rash, blistering, peeling skin, or swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. These could be signs of serious conditions such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome or DRESS.
  • Tell your doctor immediately if you notice any new symptoms or if existing symptoms worsen, such as unexplained weight loss, trouble swallowing, stomach pain, vomiting blood, black stools, or severe diarrhea.
  • If you use Appizmit for a long time (over one year), your risk of bone fractures (in your hip, wrist, or spine) may slightly increase. Inform your doctor if you have osteoporosis or take steroid medicines.
  • Long-term use of Appizmit may affect how your body absorbs vitamin B12. Tell your doctor if you experience extreme tiredness, tingling, sore tongue, muscle weakness, blurred vision, memory problems, confusion, or depression.
  • Contact your doctor if you notice signs of kidney problems, such as a reduced amount of urine, blood in your urine, or a rash with fever and joint pain.
