How to Use

Dosage

Usually, one 2.5 mg tablet twice a day. Your doctor will tell you the exact dose for your condition.

Method

Swallow the tablet whole with water. You can take it with or without food. Try to take it at the same time each day. If you have trouble swallowing it whole, you can crush it and mix it with water, apple juice, or apple sauce just before taking.

Important

Do not take more than 20 mg per day, unless your doctor tells you otherwise for a short period.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Feeling tired or pale because of low red blood cells.
  • Bleeding, such as bruising, nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or blood in your urine or stool.
  • Feeling sick to your stomach (nausea).
  • Skin rash.
RARE
  • Serious allergic reactions (swelling of your face, lips, mouth, tongue, or throat, trouble breathing). If this happens, get medical help right away.
  • Bleeding in important areas like muscles, eyes, or inside your head or spine.
  • Itching.
  • Hair loss.
  • A low number of platelets (cells that help your blood clot).
  • Yellowing of your skin or eyes (jaundice), which may mean liver problems.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to apixaban or any of its ingredients.
  • Do not take if you have severe bleeding or a condition that causes a high risk of serious bleeding (like a stomach ulcer or recent bleeding in the brain).
  • Do not take if you are already taking other medicines that prevent blood clots, unless your doctor tells you to switch to this medicine.
  • Tell your doctor if you have liver disease that increases your risk of bleeding.
  • Do not take if you are pregnant. If you become pregnant, contact your doctor right away. Discuss with your doctor if you are breastfeeding.

  • Tell your doctor if you are having surgery or a procedure that could cause bleeding. You may need to stop this medicine temporarily.
  • Do not stop taking this medicine without talking to your doctor first, as this could increase your risk of blood clots.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Consider renal impairment, age and body weight when determining the dosage. Consider potential interactions especially with other drugs that increase the risk of bleeding. (updated 19.9.2025)
