How to Use

Dosage

Usually one 2.5 mg tablet twice a day, but always follow your doctor's instructions as the dose can vary.

Method

Swallow the tablet with water. You can take it with or without food. Try to take the medicine at the same time each day. If you cannot swallow the tablet whole, you can crush it and mix it with water or applesauce just before taking it.

Important

The maximum daily dose varies depending on your condition and is decided by your doctor.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Anemia (tiredness, paleness)
  • Bleeding (including bruising and swelling)
  • Nausea
  • Low blood pressure (feeling faint, rapid heartbeat)
  • Bleeding in the eyes
  • Bleeding in the stomach or intestines
  • Bleeding from the rectum
  • Blood in urine
  • Bleeding from the nose
  • Bleeding from the gums
  • Low blood platelet count
  • Rash
  • Itching
  • Blood tests show increased GGT or ALAT levels
  • Bleeding from the mouth or blood in sputum (when coughing)
  • Bleeding from the vagina
RARE
  • Bleeding after surgery (including bruising, swelling, or fluid/blood leakage from the wound or injection site)
  • Bright red blood in stools
  • Bleeding into a muscle
  • Hair loss
  • Allergic reactions (swelling of the face, lips, mouth, tongue, and/or throat, difficulty breathing)
  • Bleeding in the brain or spinal cord
  • Bleeding in the lungs or throat
  • Bleeding into or behind the abdominal cavity
  • Blood in stools or urine detected in tests
  • Rash with blisters that look like small target spots (erythema multiforme)
  • Inflammation of blood vessels (vasculitis), which can lead to rashes, raised, flat, red, round lumps under the skin or bruises
  • Bleeding in the kidneys, which can cause kidney dysfunction (anticoagulant-related nephropathy)
  • Abnormal liver function, increased liver enzymes, and increased bilirubin (which can cause yellowing of the skin or eyes)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to apixaban or any other ingredients.
  • Do not take if you have severe bleeding or a condition that increases your risk of serious bleeding (like a recent brain bleed or stomach ulcer).
  • Do not take if you have severe liver disease that may increase your risk of bleeding.
  • Do not take if you are already taking other medicines that prevent blood clots (like warfarin or heparin), unless your doctor is switching your medication.
  • Do not take this medicine if you are pregnant. Talk to your doctor if you are breastfeeding.

  • Not recommended for children and adolescents under 18 years old.
  • Tell your doctor if you are having surgery or a procedure that might cause bleeding.
  • Tell your doctor if you have an artificial heart valve.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have an increased risk of bleeding (e.g., uncontrolled high blood pressure, over 75 years old, or weigh less than 60 kg), severe kidney disease, or previous liver problems.
