How to Use

Dosage

The usual dose is one 5 mg tablet twice a day, but your doctor may prescribe 2.5 mg twice a day depending on your condition and other risk factors.

Method

Swallow the tablet whole with water, with or without food. Try to take it at the same time each day. If you have trouble swallowing, you can crush the tablet and mix it with water, apple juice, or applesauce just before taking it.

Important

The maximum daily dose for short-term initial treatment is 20 mg, taken as two 5 mg tablets twice a day for the first 7 days. For ongoing treatment or prevention, it is usually 10 mg per day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Bleeding (e.g., from gums, nose, eyes, stomach, intestines, or in urine)
  • Bruising and swelling
  • Anemia (low red blood cells, causing tiredness or paleness)
  • Low blood pressure (can cause feeling faint or a fast heartbeat)
  • Nausea (feeling sick)
  • Increased GGT levels in blood tests (a liver enzyme)
RARE
  • Severe bleeding (e.g., in the brain, spinal cord, lungs, mouth with coughing up blood, vagina, after surgery including bruising and fluid leakage, from hemorrhoids, or dark/red blood in stool)
  • Reduced number of platelets (blood cells that help blood clot)
  • Liver problems (abnormal function, increased liver enzymes like ALAT, yellowing of skin/eyes)
  • Skin rash, itching, hair loss
  • Allergic reactions (swelling of face, lips, mouth, tongue, throat, difficulty breathing). Seek medical help immediately.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to apixaban or any other ingredients.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have severe bleeding or a medical condition that greatly increases your risk of severe bleeding, such as a recent stroke or stomach ulcer.
  • Tell your doctor if you have severe kidney or liver problems.
  • Do not take this medicine if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Tell your doctor about all other medicines you take, especially other blood thinners, as they can affect how Apixaban Sandoz works.
