How to Use

Dosage

The typical dose is one 2.5 mg tablet twice a day, or as your doctor tells you.

Method

Swallow the tablet with water. You can take it with or without food. Try to take it at the same time each day. If you have trouble swallowing the tablet whole, you can crush it and mix it with a small amount of water, apple juice, or applesauce right before taking it.

Important

The maximum daily dose is typically 20 mg (four 5 mg tablets per day) for short-term initial treatment. Always follow your doctor's instructions.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Anemia (tiredness or pale skin)
  • Bleeding (including bruises and swelling)
  • Nausea (feeling sick)
  • Low blood pressure (feeling faint or fast heartbeat)
  • Bleeding in the eyes
  • Bleeding in the stomach, intestines, or rectum
  • Blood in urine
  • Nosebleeds
  • Bleeding from gums
  • Unusual vaginal bleeding
  • Hair loss
  • Skin rash (general)
  • Itching
  • Abnormal liver function or elevated liver enzymes shown in blood tests
  • Decrease in blood platelet count (can affect blood clotting)
  • Bleeding in the mouth or blood in sputum (when coughing)
  • Bleeding after an operation (including bruises, swelling, or fluid from wound/injection site)
  • Bleeding from hemorrhoids
  • Allergic reactions (swelling of face, lips, mouth, tongue, throat, and breathing difficulties)
RARE
  • Bleeding in the brain or spinal cord
  • Bleeding in the lungs or throat
  • Skin rash with blisters, looking like small target spots (erythema multiforme)
  • Inflammation of blood vessels (vasculitis), which can cause red, raised spots or bruises on the skin
  • Bleeding in or behind the abdomen
  • Bleeding into a muscle
  • Blood in stool or urine detected by laboratory tests

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to apixaban or any other ingredients.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have severe bleeding.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have a condition that increases your risk of serious bleeding, such as a recent stomach or bowel ulcer, or a recent brain bleed.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have liver disease that increases your bleeding risk.
  • Do not take this medicine if you are already taking other medicines to prevent blood clots (like warfarin, rivaroxaban, dabigatran, or heparin), unless your doctor is switching your medication or you are using heparin for a catheter.
