How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will tell you the exact dose. Typically, you take one or two tablets twice a day.

Method

Swallow the tablet whole with water. You can take it with or without food. Try to take it at the same time each day. If you have trouble swallowing, you can crush the tablet and mix it with water, apple juice, or applesauce.

Important

The maximum daily dose is usually 10 mg (two 5 mg tablets), but for the first 7 days of treating blood clots, it can be up to 20 mg (four 5 mg tablets).

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Anemia (low red blood cells), causing tiredness or pale skin
  • Nausea (feeling sick)
  • Low blood pressure, which can make you feel faint or cause a fast heartbeat
  • Low number of platelets in your blood (can affect blood clotting)
  • Itching
  • Skin rash
  • Hair loss
  • Abnormal liver function or increased liver enzyme levels (seen in blood tests), and high bilirubin levels which can make your skin or eyes look yellow
  • Allergic reactions (swelling of face, lips, mouth, tongue, and/or throat, difficulty breathing). Seek medical help immediately.
  • Bruising or swelling
  • Nosebleeds
  • Bleeding gums
  • Blood in your urine
  • Bleeding after surgery (including bruising, swelling, or oozing from wound)
  • Stomach or bowel bleeding (bright red blood in stool)
  • Vaginal bleeding
  • Bleeding in the eye
  • Rectal bleeding
  • Bleeding in the mouth
RARE
  • Bleeding in a muscle
  • Coughing up blood or blood in your spit
  • Bleeding in the brain or spinal cord
  • Bleeding in the lungs or throat
  • Bleeding into the abdomen or behind the abdomen

Important Warnings

  • Do not use this medicine if you are allergic to apixaban or any other ingredients.
  • Do not use if you have severe bleeding.
  • Do not use if you have an organ disease that increases your risk of severe bleeding (like recent stomach or bowel ulcers, or a recent brain bleed).
  • Do not use if you have a liver disease that increases bleeding risk.
  • Do not use if you are already taking other medicines to prevent blood clots (like warfarin, rivaroxaban, dabigatran, or heparin), unless your doctor is switching your medicine.

  • Do not take this medicine if you are pregnant. If you become pregnant while taking it, contact your doctor immediately.
  • Do not stop taking this medicine without talking to your doctor first, as this can increase your risk of blood clots.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Consider renal impairment, age and body weight when determining the dosage. Consider potential interactions especially with other drugs that increase the risk of bleeding. (updated 19.9.2025)
