How to Use

Dosage

One 5 mg tablet twice daily. Your doctor may adjust the dose.

Method

Swallow the tablet with water. You can take it with or without food. Try to take your medicine at the same time each day. If you have trouble swallowing the tablet whole, you can crush it and mix it with water, apple juice, or applesauce.

Important

Maximum 10 mg per day (two 5 mg tablets) for typical ongoing treatment.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Bleeding, for example from the nose, gums, eyes, urine, mouth, vagina, rectum, or in the stomach or intestine. Also bruises and swelling.
  • Bleeding after surgery, including bruising, swelling, or fluid leakage from the surgical site.
  • Anemia (low red blood cells), which can cause tiredness and paleness.
  • Low blood pressure, which can cause weakness or a fast heart rate.
  • Nausea (feeling sick).
  • Rash on the skin.
  • Allergic reactions, such as swelling of the face, lips, mouth, tongue, or throat, and difficulty breathing. Contact a doctor immediately if these occur.
  • Decrease in platelet count (blood cells important for clotting).
  • Abnormal liver function shown in blood tests, including elevated liver enzyme levels (GGT or ALAT).
RARE
  • Bleeding in the brain or spinal cord.
  • Blood when coughing (sputum).
  • Bright red or red blood in stool.
  • Bleeding from hemorrhoids.
  • Blood detected in stool or urine tests.
  • Increased bilirubin, which can cause yellowing of the skin or eyes.
  • Itching.
  • Hair loss.
  • Bleeding in the lungs or throat.
  • Bleeding behind the abdomen.
  • Bleeding in a muscle.
  • Skin rash with blisters that look like small target spots (erythema multiforme).
  • Inflammation of blood vessels (vasculitis), which can cause rashes or bruises.
  • Kidney bleeding, which can sometimes lead to kidney problems.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to apixaban or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you are experiencing severe bleeding.
  • Do not use if you have a medical condition that increases the risk of serious bleeding, such as a recent stomach ulcer or brain bleed.
  • Do not use if you have a liver disease that increases your risk of bleeding.
  • Do not use if you are already taking other blood thinners (except when switching medications or for certain medical procedures).

  • Tell your doctor if you have an increased risk of bleeding, such as a bleeding disorder.
  • Tell your doctor if you have very high blood pressure that is not controlled by medication.
  • Tell your doctor if you are over 75 years old or weigh less than 60 kg, as your dose may need to be adjusted.
  • Tell your doctor if you have severe kidney disease, are on dialysis, or have had liver problems.
  • Tell your doctor if you have an artificial heart valve.
  • Tell your doctor if you have antiphospholipid syndrome (an immune system disorder).
  • Tell your doctor before any surgery or procedure, as you may need to stop taking this medicine temporarily.
