How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will tell you how much to take. For adults, it's usually one 5 mg tablet twice a day. If treating new blood clots, you might take two 5 mg tablets twice a day for the first 7 days, then switch to one 5 mg tablet twice a day.

Method

Swallow the tablet whole with water, with or without food. Try to take it at the same time each day. If you cannot swallow the tablet whole, you can crush it and mix it with water, glucose solution, apple juice, or apple sauce just before taking.

Important

The highest recommended daily dose for adults is 20 mg (four 5 mg tablets) for the first 7 days when treating blood clots. After that, the maximum is usually 10 mg (two 5 mg tablets) per day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Bleeding in the eyes
  • Bleeding in the stomach or gut
  • Bleeding from the rectum or anus
  • Blood in urine
  • Nosebleed
  • Bleeding gums
  • Bruising and swelling
  • Bleeding from the vagina
  • Bleeding in the mouth
  • Bright red blood in stool
  • Bleeding after surgery (including bruising, swelling, or fluid leaking from wound)
  • Anemia (can cause tiredness or paleness)
  • Low platelet count (can affect blood clotting)
  • Nausea (feeling sick)
  • Rash
  • Itching
  • Hair loss
  • Low blood pressure (may cause faintness or fast heart rate)
  • Abnormal liver function tests (e.g., increased GGT or ALAT)
RARE
  • Bleeding in the brain or spinal cord
  • Coughing up blood or blood in saliva
  • Bleeding in the abdomen (internal)
  • Bleeding in the lungs or throat
  • Bleeding in a muscle
  • Bleeding from hemorrhoids
  • Kidney bleeding, sometimes with blood in urine, leading to kidney problems
  • Severe allergic reactions (hypersensitivity) with swelling of the face, lips, mouth, tongue and/or throat, and trouble breathing. Seek immediate medical help.
  • Skin rash with blisters that look like small target spots (erythema multiforme).
  • Inflammation of blood vessels (vasculitis), causing red spots or bruises under the skin.
  • Increased bilirubin (red blood cell breakdown product) which can cause yellowing of the skin or eyes.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to apixaban or any of its other ingredients.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have severe bleeding.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have a disease that increases your risk of serious bleeding, such as an active or recent stomach or gut ulcer, or a recent brain bleed.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have a liver disease that increases your risk of bleeding.
  • Do not take this medicine if you are currently taking other medicines to prevent blood clots (like warfarin or heparin), unless your doctor has specifically instructed you to switch.
