How to Use

Dosage

For adults, typically one 5 mg tablet twice a day. Your doctor will tell you the exact dose for your condition, which may vary.

Method

Swallow the tablet whole with water, with or without food. Try to take it at the same time each day. If you have trouble swallowing, you can crush the tablet and mix it with water, apple juice, or applesauce just before taking it.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 20 mg (two 5 mg tablets twice a day) for the first 7 days when treating blood clots. Your doctor will specify your maximum dose.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Bleeding (e.g., from the nose, gums, eyes, stomach, intestines, rectum, vagina, or blood in urine; also bruising or swelling)
  • Anemia (which can make you feel tired or pale)
  • Low blood pressure (which can cause weakness or a fast heartbeat)
  • Nausea (feeling sick to your stomach)
  • Rash
  • Itching
  • Hair loss
  • Decreased number of platelets in your blood (cells that help blood clot)
  • Changes in blood tests showing increased liver enzyme levels (GGT or ALAT)
RARE
  • Serious bleeding (e.g., in the brain or spinal cord, lungs, throat, muscles, kidneys, or behind the abdominal cavity; blood in mouth when coughing)
  • Abnormal liver function or increased bilirubin (which can make your skin or eyes yellow)
  • Allergic reactions (signs include swelling of the face, lips, mouth, tongue, and/or throat, and trouble breathing. Seek medical help right away if this happens)
  • Severe skin rash with blisters that look like small targets (Erythema multiforme)
  • Inflammation of blood vessels (vasculitis), which can cause a rash or raised, red bumps under the skin.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to apixaban or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you have severe active bleeding.
  • Do not take if you have a condition that increases the risk of severe bleeding, such as a bleeding stomach ulcer, recent brain bleed, severe liver disease, or if you are already taking other medicines to prevent blood clots (unless switching treatments under doctor's guidance).
  • Talk to your doctor if you have an artificial heart valve.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have severe kidney problems, are over 75 years old, or weigh less than 60 kg, as your dose may need adjustment.

  • Do not take this medicine if you are pregnant. If you are breastfeeding, talk to your doctor before taking it.
  • Inform your doctor about all other medicines you are taking, especially other blood thinners, certain antifungals, HIV/AIDS medicines, NSAIDs (like aspirin or naproxen), or St. John's wort, as they can change the effect of Apixaban Grindeks.
  • If you need surgery or a procedure that might cause bleeding, your doctor may ask you to stop taking this medicine temporarily.
