How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will prescribe your dose, which is usually one 2.5 mg or 5 mg tablet twice a day.

Method

Swallow the tablet whole with water, with or without food. Take it at the same time each day.

Important

The maximum daily dose is determined by your doctor, usually no more than 10 mg per day for long-term use.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Bleeding (e.g., bruising, nosebleeds, gum bleeds, blood in urine or stool, bleeding after surgery)
  • Anemia (tiredness, paleness)
  • Nausea
  • Low blood pressure (feeling faint, fast heart rate)
  • Rash
  • Decreased platelet count (can affect blood clotting)
RARE
  • Allergic reactions (swelling of the face, lips, mouth, tongue and/or throat, difficulty breathing - Contact a doctor immediately.)
  • Bleeding into muscles, eyes, brain or spinal cord, lungs or throat, behind the abdomen.
  • Hair loss

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to apixaban or any other ingredient.
  • Do not take if you have severe bleeding or a condition that increases the risk of serious bleeding (such as a stomach or intestinal ulcer, or a brain bleed).
  • Do not take if you have a liver disease that could increase your risk of bleeding.
  • Do not take other blood thinners at the same time, unless specifically instructed by your doctor.
