How to Use

Dosage

The typical dose is 15 mg for anemia caused by folate deficiency. For other treatments, your doctor will determine your individual dose.

Method

Take the tablets with enough liquid, such as a glass of water. You can divide the tablet into equal halves if needed.

Important

Your doctor will tell you the maximum daily dose you should take.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Severe diarrhea
  • Dehydration (loss of fluids) due to diarrhea
  • Soreness or inflammation in the mouth or bowel (can be life-threatening)
  • Decrease in certain white blood cells (can be life-threatening)
  • Redness and swelling of palms and soles, which may lead to skin peeling (hand-foot syndrome)
RARE
  • Severe allergic reactions (sudden itchy rash, swelling of hands, feet, ankles, face, lips, throat which can make swallowing or breathing difficult, fainting)
  • Fever (when given as an injection)
  • Insomnia (difficulty sleeping) after high doses
  • Restlessness after high doses
  • Depression after high doses
  • Increase in epileptic seizures
  • Gastrointestinal disturbances after high doses
  • Increased ammonia levels in the blood

Important Warnings

  • Do not take Antrex if you are allergic to folinic acid or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not take Antrex if you have pernicious anemia or another type of megaloblastic anemia caused by a lack of vitamin B12.
  • Tell your doctor if you are being treated with 5-fluorouracil, especially if you are elderly or unwell, as Antrex can make its side effects worse.
  • Tell your doctor if you have epilepsy and are taking medicines for it, as your doctor may need to adjust your dose.
  • Do not take Antrex if you have macrocytosis (enlarged red blood cells) caused by certain cancer medicines, as Antrex should not be used to treat this condition.

  • This medicine contains lactose. If your doctor has told you that you have an intolerance to some sugars, discuss this with your doctor before taking Antrex.
