How to Use

Dosage

The typical dose for adults and adolescents is 500 mg every 6 hours or 1000 mg every 6-8 hours. For children aged 1 year and older, the dose is 15-25 mg per kg of body weight every 6 hours.

Method

Andatin is given as a drip into a vein. Smaller doses (up to 500 mg) take 20-30 minutes, and larger doses (over 500 mg) take 40-60 minutes. The drip speed can be reduced if you feel sick.

Important

The maximum daily amount typically given is up to 4000 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea. Nausea and vomiting are more common in patients with low white blood cell count.
  • Swelling and redness around the vein, very tender to touch.
  • Rash.
  • Abnormal liver function detected in blood tests.
  • Increase in some white blood cells.
RARE
  • Local skin redness.
  • Local pain and hard lump at the injection site.
  • Itching.
  • Hives.
  • Fever.
  • Changes in blood cell counts (may cause tiredness, pale skin, and slow healing of bruises).
  • Abnormal kidney, liver, and blood function detected in blood tests.
  • Tremor and uncontrollable muscle twitching.
  • Seizures.
  • Mental changes (like mood changes and difficulty thinking clearly).
  • Hallucinations (seeing, hearing, or feeling things that aren't there).
  • Confusion.
  • Dizziness, drowsiness.
  • Low blood pressure.
  • Yeast infection.
  • Staining of teeth and/or tongue.
  • Severe diarrhea due to inflammation of the large intestine.
  • Taste disturbances.
  • Liver dysfunction.
  • Liver inflammation (hepatitis).
  • Kidney dysfunction.
  • Changes in urine amount or color.
  • Brain disorder, tingling (numbness), local tremors.
  • Hearing loss.
  • Severe liver failure due to inflammation (fulminant hepatitis).
  • Stomach or intestinal inflammation (gastroenteritis).
  • Intestinal inflammation with bloody diarrhea.
  • Red, swollen tongue, "hairy" tongue, heartburn, sore throat, increased saliva.
  • Abdominal pain.
  • Vertigo, headache.
  • Ringing in the ears (tinnitus).
  • Joint pain, weakness.
  • Irregular, strong, or fast heartbeat.
  • Chest discomfort, difficulty breathing, fast and shallow breathing, upper back pain.
  • Redness, bluish discoloration of face and lips, skin changes, heavy sweating.
  • Itching in women's external genitalia.
  • Changes in blood cell counts.
  • Worsening of a rare muscle weakness disease (myasthenia gravis).

Important Warnings

  • Do not use Andatin if you are allergic to imipenem, cilastatin, or any other ingredients in this medicine, or to other antibiotics like penicillins or cephalosporins.
  • If you experience allergic reactions such as rash, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, and/or throat (with difficulty breathing or swallowing), or low blood pressure, stop using the medicine and contact a doctor immediately.
  • Seek immediate medical attention if you develop severe skin reactions like peeling skin (toxic epidermal necrolysis), Stevens-Johnson syndrome, erythema multiforme, or severe rashes with skin and hair loss.
  • This medicine may cause hallucinations, dizziness, or drowsiness, which can affect your ability to drive or use machines. If you experience these, talk to your doctor before driving or operating machinery.
  • Each vial contains 37.5 mg of sodium, which is important to consider if you are on a low-sodium diet.
