How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide your dose. For depression, OCD, or anxiety, it's usually 75-150 mg per day. For panic attacks, it starts at 10 mg daily, slowly increasing to 100 mg daily. For long-term pain, it's usually 10-150 mg per day.

Method

Swallow the tablets whole or divided with plenty of liquid. Do not chew or crush them. You can take Anafranil with or without food. Avoid grapefruit, grapefruit juice, and cranberry juice while taking this medicine.

Important

Do not take more than 150 mg per day, unless your doctor tells you otherwise.

  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Hot flashes
  • Dilated pupils (large pupils)
  • Low blood pressure when standing up
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Stomach problems

  • Increased liver enzyme levels (seen in blood tests)
  • Allergic skin reactions, itching, or skin sensitivity to light
  • Breast enlargement or milk production

  • Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
RARE
  • Worsening of psychotic symptoms
  • Seizures or convulsions
  • Lack of muscle coordination (ataxia)
  • Heart rhythm disturbances
  • Increased blood pressure
  • Changes in brain activity (EEG changes)
  • High fever
  • Glaucoma (high pressure in the eyes)
  • Difficulty emptying the bladder (urinary retention)
  • Heart conduction problems
  • Liver inflammation (hepatitis)
  • Yellowing of skin or eyes (jaundice)
  • Swelling (edema)
  • Hair loss
  • Problem with a hormone that controls body water (abnormal ADH secretion)
  • Allergic lung inflammation
  • Severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis)
  • Changes in blood cell counts
  • Increased white blood cells (eosinophilia)
  • Red or purple spots on the skin (purpura)
  • Inner restlessness or a strong need to move
  • Repeated, uncontrolled, and useless movements
  • Muscle damage
  • Increased levels of a hormone called prolactin in the blood
  • Serotonin syndrome (agitation, confusion, diarrhea, high fever, high blood pressure, heavy sweating, fast heart rate)
  • Delayed or absent ejaculation in men
  • Increased risk of bone fractures

Important Warnings

  • Do not use Anafranil if you are allergic to clomipramine, other similar antidepressants, or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not use Anafranil if you are taking other antidepressants called MAO inhibitors.
  • Do not use Anafranil if you recently had a heart attack, have severe heart disease, or a heart rhythm problem since birth.
  • Contact your doctor or go to a hospital immediately if you have thoughts of harming yourself or taking your own life.
  • Tell your doctor if you have epilepsy or have had seizures.

  • Tell your doctor if you have liver or kidney disease.

  • Tell your doctor if you have an overactive thyroid.
  • Avoid drinking too much alcohol while taking this medicine.
  • Do not use Anafranil during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless your doctor specifically advises it.
  • This medicine can make you sleepy, less alert, or cause blurred vision. Do not drive or operate machinery if you experience these effects.
  • Anafranil can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight. Avoid direct sun and use protective clothing and sunglasses.
  • Anafranil can cause dry mouth, which may increase the risk of tooth decay. See your dentist regularly if you take this medicine long-term.
