How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide your dose. For most conditions, it's usually between 75 mg and 150 mg per day. For panic attacks, treatment starts at 10 mg daily and slowly increases to 100 mg daily.

Method

Swallow Anafranil Retard tablets whole or divided with plenty of liquid. Do not chew or crush them. You can take your medicine with or without food. Avoid grapefruit, cranberry, or grapefruit juice.

Important

The maximum daily dose is usually 150 mg, but your doctor will advise you.

  • Worsening of mental illness (psychotic symptoms)

  • Lack of coordination (ataxia)
  • Increased blood pressure
  • High fever
  • Glaucoma (high eye pressure)
  • Difficulty emptying bladder (urinary retention)
  • Heart conduction problems
  • Liver inflammation (hepatitis), yellow skin/eyes (jaundice)
  • Swelling (local or general)
  • Hair loss
  • Problems with ADH hormone
  • Allergic lung inflammation, severe allergic reaction
  • Changes in blood cell counts, purple spots on skin
  • Inner restlessness or urge to move
  • Uncontrolled, repetitive movements
  • Muscle damage
  • Increased prolactin hormone in blood
  • Serotonin syndrome (symptoms include agitation, confusion, diarrhea, high fever, high blood pressure, heavy sweating, fast heart rate)
  • Delayed or absent ejaculation in men

Important Warnings

  • Do not use Anafranil if you are allergic to clomipramine, other similar antidepressant medicines, or any other ingredients in Anafranil.
  • Do not use Anafranil if you are taking other antidepressant medicines called MAO inhibitors.
  • Do not use Anafranil if you have recently had a heart attack or have a serious heart condition, including an irregular heartbeat or a problem with your heart's electrical signals.
  • Tell your doctor immediately if you have thoughts of harming yourself or suicide, especially when starting the medicine or changing the dose.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have a history of seizures, schizophrenia, or other mental health problems.

  • Inform your doctor if you have glaucoma (high pressure in your eyes), liver or kidney disease, or difficulty urinating.
  • Tell your doctor if you have an overactive thyroid, drink a lot of alcohol, often experience constipation, or easily feel dizzy.
  • Anafranil can make your skin more sensitive to the sun. Avoid direct sunlight and use protective clothing and sunglasses.
  • Do not stop taking Anafranil suddenly. Always talk to your doctor first, as stopping too quickly can make your condition worse or cause withdrawal symptoms.
