Method

This medicine is given by a healthcare professional as an injection into a muscle or vein, or as a drip (infusion) into a vein.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Skin rash, itching
  • Loose stools
RARE
  • Severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis), with skin redness, itchy rash, shortness of breath, or dizziness
  • Weakened immune system due to changes in white blood cells (agranulocytosis), causing fever and serious general illness or local infection symptoms like sore throat or painful urination
  • Colon inflammation (colitis) with watery diarrhea, often with blood and mucus, stomach pain, and/or fever
  • Reduction in red blood cells (anemia), causing pale skin, weakness, and shortness of breath
  • Reduced platelets (thrombocytopenia)
  • Reduced or increased white blood cells (leukopenia, eosinophilia)
  • Inflammation of the tongue and mouth lining
  • Mouth and tongue inflammation, stomach pain
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Hives (urticaria)
  • Crystals in urine (crystalluria), indicating kidney irritation
  • Severe skin inflammation with peeling (exfoliative dermatitis)
  • Severe skin changes (e.g., erythema multiforme, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, Lyell's syndrome)
  • Dizziness, headache, involuntary muscle jerks (myoclonus), and seizures
  • Liver inflammation (hepatitis) and yellowing of the skin/eyes (jaundice) due to blocked bile flow; elevated liver values
  • Kidney inflammation (acute interstitial nephritis)
  • Pain and swelling at the injection site
  • Fungal overgrowth in the mouth and abdomen

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to ampicillin or other penicillins.
  • Tell your doctor if you are allergic to cephalosporins (another group of antibiotics) or have had allergies before.
  • Stop treatment and seek immediate medical help if you get a severe allergic reaction with rash, hives, difficulty breathing, or dizziness.
  • Watch out for watery diarrhea with blood, mucus, stomach pain, and/or fever, as this could be a sign of colon inflammation.
  • If you have mononucleosis or chronic lymphocytic leukemia, you might get a skin rash when using this medicine.

  • If you have severe kidney problems, your doctor will adjust your dose and monitor your kidney function.
  • If you take blood thinners, tell your doctor as Amroliv may affect how your blood clots, and your dose may need adjustment.
  • If you are providing urine samples for glucose tests, tell your doctor or nurse that you are using Amroliv.
  • Small amounts of ampicillin pass into breast milk; tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding as it can cause reactions in your baby.
