How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide your dose. A typical dose is 4-5 ml (40-50 mg of chloroprocaine hydrochloride).

Method

This medicine is given by a doctor as an injection into the spinal fluid for surgeries lasting up to 40 minutes.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Low blood pressure
  • Nausea (feeling sick)
  • Anxiety
  • Restlessness
  • Unusual skin sensations (like tingling or numbness)
  • Dizziness
  • Vomiting
  • Difficulty urinating
RARE
  • Sudden, life-threatening allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) with symptoms like itching, rash, swelling, sneezing, vomiting, dizziness, sweating, fever, and breathing difficulties.
  • Nerve damage (neuropathy)
  • Sleepiness that can lead to unconsciousness and stopped breathing
  • Spinal block (paralysis of body below injection, loss of bladder/bowel control, loss of feeling or sexual function in the groin area)
  • Low blood pressure due to spinal block
  • Inflammation of the arachnoid membrane in the brain (arachnoiditis)
  • Cauda equina syndrome (pressure on lower spinal nerves) leading to lasting nerve damage
  • Slow heart rate
  • Tremors
  • Seizures
  • Numbness of the tongue
  • Hearing problems
  • Vision problems
  • Speech problems
  • Unconsciousness
  • Double vision
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Weak heart muscle function
  • Heart attack (cardiac arrest)
  • Breathing failure

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to chloroprocaine hydrochloride, similar anesthetics, or any other ingredients.
  • Do not take if you have a severe heart condition affecting your heart rhythm.
  • Do not take if you have severe anemia (low red blood cells).
  • Do not take if you have an infection or inflammation at or near the injection site.
  • Tell your doctor if you have certain serious conditions affecting your brain or spinal cord, such as meningitis, polio, tumors, or a recent spinal injury.
