How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide your dose. For adults, it's usually 500 mg into a muscle four times a day, or 500 mg to 2 g into a vein 4 to 6 times a day.

Method

A doctor or nurse will give this medicine as an injection into a muscle or a vein, or as a drip (infusion) directly into a vein.

Important

For adults, the maximum daily dose is generally 12 grams.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Loose stools
  • Rash
  • Anemia (low red blood cells, causing pale skin, weakness, and shortness of breath)
  • Low platelet count (thrombocytopenia)
  • Changes in white blood cell count (low or high white blood cells)
  • Inflammation of the tongue and mouth lining
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Inflammation in the large intestine (colitis)
  • Diarrhea
  • Hives
RARE
  • Severe skin inflammation with peeling skin (exfoliative dermatitis)
  • Severe skin changes (erythema multiforme)
  • Yeast infection (candidiasis)
  • Local pain at injection site
  • Increased liver enzyme values

Important Warnings

  • Do not use this medicine if you are allergic to ampicillin, other penicillins, cephalosporins, or any other ingredient.
  • Tell your doctor if you have ever had an allergic reaction to an antibiotic.
  • If you have kidney disease, your doctor may need to adjust your dose.
  • Tell your doctor if you have had bowel problems, such as colitis.
  • Seek medical attention if you experience severe watery diarrhea, stomach pain, or fever during or after treatment, as these can be signs of a serious infection.
