How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide the right dose based on how severe your infection is. The usual dose is 1.5–12 grams per day, given in equal doses every 6 or 8 hours.

Method

This medicine is given as a deep injection into a muscle, a fast injection into a vein (over at least 3 minutes), or a slow infusion into a vein (over 15-30 minutes).

Important

You should not take more than 4 grams of sulbactam per day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Decrease in red blood cells (anemia), decrease in platelets, or increase in certain white blood cells (eosinophilia). These usually go away after treatment.
  • Inflammation of a vein.
  • Diarrhea.
  • Temporary increase in liver enzymes (SGOT, SGPT) and bilirubin, indicating abnormal liver function.
  • Pain at the injection site.
RARE
  • Headache.
  • Decrease in white blood cells (neutrophils, granulocytes), or hemolytic anemia (red blood cells destroyed too fast), bleeding spots due to low platelets.
  • Nausea, vomiting, feeling unwell, fatigue.
  • Skin rash, itching, widespread severe skin reactions (red, swollen, blistering, peeling skin), red skin, or bruises.
  • Severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis, anaphylactic shock, hypersensitivity), swelling of the face, lips, tongue, and/or throat with difficulty swallowing and breathing (angioedema).
  • Convulsions (seizures), dizziness, drowsiness.
  • Difficulty breathing.
  • Inflammation of the small and large intestines (enterocolitis) with bloody stools, inflammation of the tongue or mouth, discolored tongue, stomach pain.
  • Abnormal liver function, jaundice (yellowing of skin/eyes), cholestasis (bile flow obstruction), hepatitis.
  • Reactions at the injection site (if given as an injection).

Important Warnings

  • Do not use this medicine if you are allergic to ampicillin, sulbactam, penicillin antibiotics, other beta-lactam antibiotics, or lidocaine.
  • Tell your doctor if you have liver problems, mononucleosis (glandular fever), or lymphatic leukemia, as this medicine may not be suitable.
  • Contact your doctor right away if you get stomach pain, itching, dark urine, yellow skin or eyes, nausea, or feel weak, as these can be signs of liver problems.
  • Seek medical help immediately if you develop severe skin reactions like redness or rash.
  • Tell your doctor right away if you have severe or lasting diarrhea, especially if it contains blood or mucus. Do not take anti-diarrhea medicine without talking to your doctor.
