A healthcare professional will give you this medicine as an injection into a muscle or a vein, or as a drip (infusion) into a vein.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • loose stools
  • skin rash
RARE
  • severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis), with symptoms like itching, hives, facial swelling, and breathing difficulties. Seek immediate medical attention.
  • reduction in red blood cells (anemia), which can cause pale skin, weakness, and shortness of breath.
  • reduction in white blood cells, which can weaken the body's defense against infections. If you develop fever or signs of infection, seek medical attention.
  • reduction in platelets (thrombocytopenia), which can lead to bleeding or bruising.
  • increased or decreased white blood cell count (leukopenia, eosinophilia).
  • inflammation of the large intestine (colitis), with symptoms such as watery diarrhea (often with blood or mucus), abdominal pain, and/or fever.
  • inflammation of the tongue and mouth lining.
  • nausea and vomiting.
  • diarrhea (other than related to colitis).
  • hives (urticaria).
  • severe skin inflammation with peeling (exfoliative dermatitis).
  • severe skin reactions, such as erythema multiforme.
  • yeast infection (candidiasis).
  • local pain at the injection site (with intramuscular injection).
  • increased liver enzyme values.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to ampicillin or other penicillin or cephalosporin antibiotics.
  • Tell your doctor if you have ever had an allergic reaction to any antibiotic before.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have kidney disease.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have had stomach or bowel diseases, especially colitis (inflammation of the large intestine).
  • Talk to your doctor if you have myasthenia (a condition causing muscle weakness and fatigue).

  • Contact your doctor immediately if you develop severe watery diarrhea with blood or mucus, stomach pain, and/or fever during or after treatment, as this could be a sign of serious bowel inflammation.
  • If you are taking allopurinol (a medicine for gout), the risk of skin rashes may increase.
  • If you are taking methotrexate (a medicine for cancer or rheumatism), its side effects may increase.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, talk to your doctor before using this medicine.
  • Be cautious when driving or operating machinery if the medicine causes side effects that affect your concentration, such as drowsiness.
