Amoxin comp is an antibiotic containing amoxicillin and clavulanic acid, used to kill bacteria that cause infections.

How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide the right dose based on your child's weight. The recommended dose is 20 mg/5 mg to 60 mg/15 mg per kilogram of body weight per day, divided into three doses.

Method

Shake the bottle well before each dose. Give the medicine to your child with a meal. Use the measuring spoon or syringe provided in the package.

Important

Doses should be spread evenly throughout the day, with at least four hours between doses. Do not give two doses within the same hour. Do not give the medicine for more than two weeks.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Thrush (a yeast infection in the mouth, vagina, or skin folds).
  • Nausea (feeling sick), especially with high doses; if this happens, give Amoxin comp with a meal.
  • Vomiting.
  • Diarrhoea.
  • Rash, itching, hives (itchy raised rash).
  • Indigestion.
  • Dizziness.
  • Headache.
  • Increase in liver enzyme levels (seen in blood tests).
RARE
  • Serious skin reactions, like widespread rash, blisters, peeling skin, or a burning sensation. Seek immediate medical help.
  • Allergic reactions, such as rash, fever, swollen glands, swelling of the face or throat (breathing difficulties), chest pain, or fainting. Seek immediate medical help.
  • Colon inflammation, causing watery diarrhoea, often with blood and mucus, stomach pain, and/or fever.
  • Pancreas inflammation, causing severe, continuous stomach pain.
  • Liver or kidney inflammation, yellowing of the skin and eyes (jaundice).
  • Easy bleeding, decreased white blood cells, decreased red blood cells (seen in blood tests).
  • Hyperactivity.
  • Seizures (fits).
  • Black hairy tongue.
  • Stained teeth (in children, usually goes away with brushing).
  • Crystals in urine, which can lead to kidney problems.

Important Warnings

  • Do not give if your child is allergic to amoxicillin, clavulanic acid, penicillin, or any other ingredient.
  • Do not give if your child has had a severe allergic reaction to another antibiotic before, such as a rash or swelling of the face/throat.
  • Do not give if your child has had liver problems or jaundice (yellow skin) with previous antibiotic use.
  • Talk to your doctor if your child has liver or kidney disease.
  • Talk to your doctor if your child has glandular fever.

  • Talk to your doctor if your child is not urinating regularly.
  • Do not give to newborns (up to 4 weeks old) without a doctor's advice. Do not use for more than one week in children under 3 years old unless advised by a doctor.
  • Sulfur dioxide can rarely cause severe allergic reactions and breathing difficulties.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category A

Suitable for older adults. Increase the dosing interval in severe renal impairment. May potentiate the effect of methotrexate. (updated 6.11.2023)
