Amloratio is a medicine that contains amlodipine and is used to treat high blood pressure and chest pain (angina).

How to Use

Dosage

The usual starting dose for adults is 5 mg (one 5 mg tablet or half of a 10 mg tablet) once a day. Your doctor may increase this to 10 mg (one 10 mg tablet or two 5 mg tablets) once a day if needed. For children aged 6-17, the recommended starting dose is 2.5 mg once a day, up to a maximum of 5 mg.

Method

Take this medicine with water, at the same time each day, with or without food. Do not take it with grapefruit juice. Amloratio 5 mg tablets can be divided into two equal doses.

Important

The maximum daily dose for adults is 10 mg. For children (6-17 years), the maximum daily dose is 5 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Swelling (fluid retention)
  • Headache, dizziness, sleepiness (especially at the start of treatment)
  • Palpitations (feeling your heart beat), flushing
  • Stomach pain, nausea
  • Changes in bowel habits, diarrhea, constipation, indigestion
  • Tiredness, weakness
  • Vision problems, double vision
  • Muscle cramps
  • Swelling of the ankles
RARE
  • Mood changes, anxiety, depression, sleeplessness
  • Tremor, changes in taste, fainting
  • Numbness or tingling in arms and legs, reduced sensitivity to pain
  • Ringing in the ears
  • Low blood pressure
  • Sneezing/runny nose caused by inflammation in the lining of the nose (rhinitis)
  • Cough
  • Dry mouth, vomiting
  • Hair loss, increased sweating, itchy skin, red patches on skin, skin discoloration
  • Problems with urination, increased need to urinate at night, increased frequency of urination
  • Inability to achieve an erection, breast enlargement or discomfort in men
  • Pain, general feeling of being unwell
  • Muscle or joint pain, back pain
  • Weight increase or decrease
  • Confusion
  • Decrease in white blood cells and platelets (may cause unusual bruising or bleeding)
  • Very high blood sugar levels (hyperglycaemia)
  • Nerve disorder (may cause muscle weakness, tingling or numbness)
  • Swollen gums, bleeding gums
  • Stomach bloating (gastritis)
  • Abnormal liver function, liver inflammation (hepatitis), yellow skin (jaundice), increase in liver enzymes (may affect some lab tests)
  • Increased muscle stiffness
  • Inflammation of blood vessels (often with skin rash)
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Tremor, rigid posture, mask-like face, slow movements, shuffling gait, unbalanced walking

Important Warnings

  • Do not take Amloratio if you are allergic to amlodipine or any other ingredient in this medicine, or to other calcium channel blockers. Also, do not take it if you have very low blood pressure, severe narrowing of the heart valve (aortic stenosis), cardiogenic shock, or heart failure after a heart attack.
  • Tell your doctor before taking this medicine if you have had a recent heart attack, heart failure, a very high blood pressure crisis, liver disease, or if you are elderly and your dose needs to be increased.
  • This medicine is not for children under 6 years of age.
  • Do not drink grapefruit juice or eat grapefruit while taking Amloratio, as it can increase the amount of amlodipine in your blood.
  • Amloratio can make you feel sick, dizzy, tired, or give you a headache. If this happens, do not drive or use machines and contact your doctor.

  • If you are pregnant, think you might be pregnant, or are planning to get pregnant, talk to your doctor before taking this medicine. Amlodipine passes into breast milk in small amounts, so talk to your doctor if you are breastfeeding or plan to.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category A

Suitable for older adults. Significant adverse effects include ankle oedema and orthostatic hypotension. Consider potential interactions. Avoid grapefruit. (updated 17.2.2025)
