How to Use

Dosage

The usual starting dose for adults is 5 mg once daily, which may be increased to 10 mg once daily. For children (6-17 years), the usual starting dose is 2.5 mg once daily.

Method

Take your tablet with water at the same time each day, with or without food. Do not take with grapefruit juice. The tablet can be divided into equal doses.

Important

The maximum daily dose for adults is 10 mg, and for children (6-17 years) it is 5 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Headache, dizziness, sleepiness (especially at the start of treatment)
  • Palpitations (feeling your heartbeat), flushing
  • Stomach pain, nausea
  • Swelling of ankles (edema), tiredness
RARE
  • Sudden wheezing, chest pain, shortness of breath, or difficulty breathing
  • Swelling of eyelids, face, or lips
  • Swelling of tongue and throat causing severe breathing difficulties
  • Severe skin reactions (e.g., severe rash, hives, red skin, itching, blisters, peeling skin, or inflamed mucous membranes)
  • Heart attack or abnormal heart rhythm
  • Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas), causing severe stomach and back pain and strong feeling of being unwell
  • Mood changes, anxiety, depression, sleeplessness
  • Tremor, changes in taste, fainting, weakness
  • Numbness or tingling in arms and legs; inability to feel pain
  • Visual disturbances, double vision, ringing in the ears
  • Too low blood pressure
  • Sneezing/runny nose due to inflamed nasal lining (rhinitis)
  • Changes in bowel habits, diarrhea, constipation, indigestion, dry mouth, vomiting
  • Hair loss, increased sweating, itchy skin, red patches on skin, skin discoloration
  • Changes in urination needs, increased urination at night, increased frequency of urination
  • Impotence, discomfort or enlargement of breasts in men
  • Weakness, pain, feeling unwell
  • Joint or muscle pain, muscle cramps, back pain
  • Weight gain or loss
  • Feeling confused
  • Reduced white blood cells or platelets (leading to easy bruising/bleeding)
  • Excessive increase in blood sugar (hyperglycemia)
  • Nervous disorder causing weakness, tingling or numbness
  • Cough, swollen gums
  • Abdominal swelling (gastritis)
  • Abnormal liver function, liver inflammation (hepatitis), yellow skin (jaundice), elevated liver enzymes
  • Increased muscle stiffness
  • Inflammation of blood vessels often with itchy skin
  • Photosensitivity
  • Rigidity, tremor, and/or movement disorders

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to amlodipine or other similar medicines (calcium channel blockers), or any other ingredients. Signs of allergy can be itching, red skin, or trouble breathing.
  • Do not take if you have very low blood pressure.
  • Do not take if you have a severe narrowing of the heart's main valve (aortic stenosis) or cardiogenic shock (a condition where your heart cannot pump enough blood to your body).
  • Do not take if you have heart failure after a heart attack.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have had a recent heart attack, heart failure, very high blood pressure, liver disease, or if you are elderly and your dose needs to be adjusted.

  • Do not consume grapefruit or grapefruit juice while taking this medicine, as it can increase the effect of the medicine.
  • This medicine may affect your ability to drive or use machines. If you feel sick, dizzy, tired, or have a headache, do not drive or use machines and contact your doctor immediately.

Category A
