How to Use

Dosage

The usual dose is 5 mg once a day.

Method

Take the tablet with water at the same time each day, with or without food. Do not take with grapefruit juice.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 10 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Headache, dizziness, drowsiness
  • Palpitations (feeling your heartbeat), flushing
  • Stomach pain, nausea
  • Swollen ankles (edema), tiredness
RARE
  • Sudden wheezing, chest pain, shortness of breath, or difficulty breathing
  • Swelling of eyelids, face, or lips
  • Swelling of the tongue and throat, causing severe breathing difficulties
  • Severe skin reactions including intense rash, hives, widespread reddening of the skin, severe itching, blisters, skin peeling and swelling, inflammation of mucous membranes (e.g., Stevens-Johnson syndrome) or other allergic reactions
  • Heart attack, abnormal heart rhythm
  • Pancreatitis, which may cause severe stomach and back pain with a feeling of being very unwell
  • Mood changes, anxiety, depression, insomnia
  • Tremor, altered taste, fainting, weakness
  • Numbness or tingling in limbs; inability to feel pain
  • Vision problems, double vision, ringing in ears
  • Low blood pressure
  • Sneezing/runny nose due to nasal inflammation (rhinitis)
  • Changes in bowel habits, diarrhea, constipation, indigestion, dry mouth
  • Hair loss, increased sweating, itchy skin, red patches on skin, skin discoloration
  • Changes in urination, increased need to urinate at night, frequent urination
  • Impotence, breast discomfort or enlargement in men
  • Weakness, pain, feeling unwell
  • Joint or muscle pain, muscle cramps, back pain
  • Weight gain or loss
  • Confusion
  • Decrease in white blood cells and platelets (leading to easy bruising or bleeding)
  • High blood sugar
  • Nerve disorder (can cause weakness, tingling, or numbness)
  • Cough, swollen gums
  • Swollen stomach (gastritis)
  • Abnormal liver function, liver inflammation (hepatitis), yellow skin (jaundice), elevated liver enzymes
  • Increased muscle stiffness
  • Blood vessel inflammation, often with itchy skin rash
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Stiffness, tremors, and/or movement disorders

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to amlodipine, other ingredients in this medicine, or other calcium channel blockers.
  • Do not use if you have very low blood pressure.
  • Do not use if you have a narrowed heart valve (aortic stenosis) or cardiogenic shock, where your heart cannot pump enough blood.
  • Do not use if you have heart failure after a heart attack.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category A

Suitable for older adults. Significant adverse effects include ankle oedema and orthostatic hypotension. Consider potential interactions. Avoid grapefruit. (updated 17.2.2025)
