How to Use

Dosage

Adults usually start with one 5 mg tablet once a day. Your doctor might increase this to one 10 mg tablet once a day. For children 6 to 17 years old, the starting dose is 2.5 mg once a day.

Method

Take the tablet with water at the same time every day, with or without food. Do not take it with grapefruit juice.

Important

Adults should not take more than 10 mg once a day. Children should not take more than 5 mg once a day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Swelling (fluid in the body)
  • Headache, dizziness, feeling sleepy (especially when you first start taking the medicine)
  • Feeling your heart beat fast (palpitations), flushing (redness of your skin)
  • Stomach pain, feeling sick (nausea)
  • Changes in how your bowels work (diarrhoea, constipation, upset stomach)
  • Feeling tired or weak
  • Problems with your eyesight, seeing double
  • Muscle cramps
  • Swelling in your ankles
RARE
  • Changes in mood, feeling anxious, sad, or having trouble sleeping
  • Shaking (tremor), changes in how things taste, fainting
  • Numbness or tingling in your arms and legs, less feeling of pain
  • Ringing in your ears
  • Low blood pressure
  • Sneezing or runny nose (from a stuffy nose), cough, dry mouth, throwing up
  • Hair loss, sweating more, itchy skin, red patches on skin, changes in skin color
  • Problems with peeing (needing to pee more often at night or just more often), not being able to get an erection, men having enlarged or sore breasts
  • Pain, generally feeling unwell, joint or muscle pain, back pain, weight gain or loss
  • Feeling confused
  • Fewer white blood cells or platelets in your blood (can make you bruise or bleed easily)
  • High blood sugar
  • Nerve problems (muscle weakness, tingling, or numbness)
  • Swollen or bleeding gums
  • Stomach inflammation (gastritis)
  • Liver problems (like hepatitis, yellow skin or eyes, changes in liver blood tests)
  • More muscle stiffness
  • Inflammation of blood vessels, often with a rash
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Movement problems (stiffness, shaking, mask-like face, slow movements, shuffling walk, trouble with balance)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to amlodipine or any of its ingredients, or to other similar medicines called calcium channel blockers. Allergy signs can be itching, red skin, or trouble breathing.
  • Do not take this medicine if your blood pressure is very low.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have a heart problem like a narrowed aortic valve, or if your heart can't pump enough blood (cardiogenic shock), or if you have heart failure after a heart attack.
  • Get medical help right away if you get sudden wheezing, chest pain, trouble breathing, swelling in your face, lips, tongue, or throat, severe skin reactions, a heart attack, an unusual heartbeat, or very bad stomach or back pain (pancreatitis).
  • This medicine can make you feel sick, dizzy, tired, or give you a headache. If this happens, do not drive or use machines, and tell your doctor.
