How to Use

Dosage

Adults: One 5 mg tablet once daily. If needed, your doctor may increase the dose to one 10 mg tablet once daily. For children (6-17 years): 2.5 mg once daily.

Method

Take the tablet whole with water, at the same time each day. You can take it with or without food. Do not take with grapefruit juice. A 2.5 mg dose can be achieved by breaking a 5 mg tablet in half.

Important

Adults: 10 mg once daily. For children (6-17 years): 5 mg once daily.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Swelling (fluid retention)
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Drowsiness (especially at the beginning of treatment)
  • Palpitations (unusual awareness of heart beat)
  • Flushing
  • Abdominal pain
  • Nausea
  • Changes in bowel habits (diarrhea, constipation)
  • Indigestion
  • Fatigue
  • Weakness
  • Vision disturbances
  • Double vision
  • Muscle cramps
  • Ankle swelling
RARE
  • Sudden wheezing, chest pain, shortness of breath or breathing difficulties
  • Swelling of eyelids, face or lips
  • Swelling of tongue and throat, causing severe breathing difficulties
  • Severe skin reactions, including rash, hives, redness, intense itching, blistering, peeling skin and swelling, inflammation of mucous membranes (Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis) or other allergic reactions
  • Heart attack
  • Abnormal heart rhythm
  • Pancreatitis, which may cause severe abdominal and back pain and feeling very unwell
  • Mood changes, anxiety, depression, insomnia
  • Tremor
  • Taste changes
  • Fainting
  • Numbness or tingling in limbs, reduced pain sensitivity
  • Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
  • Low blood pressure
  • Sneezing/runny nose due to nasal inflammation (rhinitis)
  • Cough
  • Dry mouth
  • Vomiting
  • Hair loss
  • Increased sweating
  • Itchy skin
  • Red patches on skin
  • Skin discoloration
  • Urination problems
  • Increased need to urinate at night
  • Increased frequency of urination
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Breast enlargement or discomfort in men
  • Pain
  • General malaise
  • Muscle or joint pain
  • Back pain
  • Weight gain or loss
  • Confusion
  • Decreased white blood cells, decreased platelets, leading to unusual bruising or bleeding
  • Very high blood sugar (hyperglycemia)
  • Nerve disorder with muscle weakness, tingling or numbness
  • Swollen gums, bleeding gums
  • Abdominal swelling (gastritis)
  • Abnormal liver function, hepatitis, yellow skin, increased liver enzymes, which may affect some laboratory results
  • Increased muscle tone
  • Inflammation of blood vessels (often with rash)
  • Photosensitivity
  • Disorder with stiffness, tremor and/or movement disorders

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to amlodipine, other ingredients in this medicine, or other calcium channel blockers.
  • Do not take if you have very low blood pressure, narrowing of the aortic valve, cardiogenic shock, or heart failure after a heart attack.
  • Tell your doctor if you have recently had a heart attack, heart failure, very high blood pressure, or liver disease.
  • Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
  • If the medicine causes nausea, dizziness, fatigue, or headache, do not drive or operate machinery.
