How to Use

Dosage

The usual starting dose for adults is 5 mg once a day, which can be increased to 10 mg once a day. For children (6-17 years), the usual starting dose is 2.5 mg once a day.

Method

Take this medicine exactly as your doctor tells you, with or without food, at the same time each day with water. You can divide the tablet into equal doses. Do not take with grapefruit juice.

Important

The maximum daily dose for adults is 10 mg. For children (6-17 years), the maximum daily dose is 5 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Swelling caused by fluid buildup (e.g., in ankles or feet).
  • Headache, dizziness, drowsiness (especially when starting the medicine).
  • Fast or strong heartbeat, feeling flushed.
  • Difficulty breathing.
  • Stomach pain, feeling sick.
  • Changes in bowel habits (e.g., diarrhea, constipation), indigestion.
  • Swelling of the ankles.
  • Feeling tired or weak.
  • Vision problems, seeing double.
  • Muscle cramps.
RARE
  • Mood changes, feeling anxious, depressed, or unable to sleep.
  • Shaking, changes in taste, fainting.
  • Numbness or tingling in arms and legs, not being able to feel pain.
  • Ringing in the ears.
  • Low blood pressure.
  • Sneezing or runny nose due to a cold-like inflammation.
  • Cough.
  • Dry mouth, throwing up.
  • Hair loss, more sweating, itchy skin, rash, red patches on skin, changes in skin color.
  • Problems with urination, needing to urinate more often at night, or more frequently overall.
  • Problems getting an erection, breast pain or enlargement in men.
  • Chest pain.
  • Joint or muscle pain, back pain.
  • Weight gain or loss.
  • Feeling confused.
  • Low white blood cells or platelets, which can cause easy bruising or bleeding.
  • High blood sugar.
  • Nerve problems causing muscle weakness, tingling, or numbness.
  • Swollen gums.
  • Bloating (gastritis).
  • Liver problems, yellow skin (jaundice), or high liver enzyme levels.
  • Increased muscle stiffness.
  • Inflammation of blood vessels, often with a rash.
  • Sensitivity to light.
  • Shaking, stiff posture, mask-like face, slow movements, and an unsteady, shuffling walk.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to amlodipine, other calcium channel blockers, or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have very low blood pressure.
  • Do not use if you have a very narrow heart valve (aortic stenosis), if your heart cannot pump enough blood (cardiogenic shock), or if you have heart failure after a heart attack.
  • Do not eat grapefruit or drink grapefruit juice while taking this medicine.
  • If you feel sick, dizzy, tired, or have a headache, do not drive or use machines, and talk to your doctor right away.

Category A
