How to Use

Dosage

For adults, the typical starting dose is one 5 mg tablet once a day, which can be increased to 10 mg once a day. For children aged 6-17, the usual starting dose is 2.5 mg once a day.

Method

Take the tablet with water at the same time each day, with or without food.

Important

The maximum daily dose for adults is 10 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Swelling (fluid retention)
  • Headache, dizziness, drowsiness (especially at the start of treatment)
  • Palpitations (feeling your heartbeat), flushing
  • Stomach pain, nausea (feeling sick)
  • Changes in bowel habits (diarrhea, constipation), indigestion
  • Tiredness, weakness
  • Vision problems, double vision
  • Muscle cramps
  • Swelling of the ankles
RARE
  • Sudden wheezing, chest pain, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
  • Swelling of eyelids, face or lips
  • Swelling of the tongue and throat, causing severe breathing difficulties
  • Severe skin reactions (intense rash, hives, redness, severe itching, blistering, skin peeling, inflammation of mucous membranes, or other allergic reactions)
  • Heart attack, abnormal heart rhythm
  • Inflammation of the pancreas, which can cause severe stomach and back pain and feeling very unwell
  • Mood changes, anxiety, depression, sleeplessness
  • Tremor, taste changes, fainting
  • Numbness or tingling in limbs, loss of pain sensation
  • Ringing in the ears
  • Low blood pressure
  • Sneezing/runny nose due to inflamed nasal lining (rhinitis)
  • Cough
  • Dry mouth, vomiting
  • Hair loss, increased sweating, itchy skin, red patches on skin, skin discoloration
  • Urination problems, increased need to urinate at night, frequent urination
  • Erectile dysfunction, breast pain or enlargement in men
  • Pain, feeling unwell
  • Joint or muscle pain, back pain
  • Weight gain or weight loss
  • Confusion
  • Decrease in white blood cells or platelets (can lead to easy bruising or bleeding)
  • High blood sugar (hyperglycemia)
  • Nerve disorder causing muscle weakness, tingling or numbness
  • Swollen gums
  • Swelling of the abdomen (gastritis)
  • Liver problems (liver dysfunction, inflammation, yellow skin, altered lab tests)
  • Increased muscle tension
  • Inflammation of blood vessels, often with rash
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Conditions with stiffness, tremor, and/or movement disorders

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to amlodipine or any other ingredient in this medicine, or to other calcium channel blockers.
  • Do not take if you have very low blood pressure.
  • Do not take if you have a narrowing of the heart's aortic valve or heart shock (when the heart cannot pump enough blood).
  • Do not take if you have heart failure after a heart attack.
  • Tell your doctor if you have recently had a heart attack or have heart failure.

  • Tell your doctor if you have very high blood pressure (hypertensive crisis) or liver disease.
  • Tell your doctor if you are elderly and your dose needs to be increased.
  • Do not eat grapefruit or drink grapefruit juice while taking this medicine, as it can increase the amount of medicine in your blood.
  • If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, talk to your doctor before taking this medicine.
  • If you feel sick, dizzy, or tired, or get a headache, do not drive or use machines and contact your doctor.

Category A
