How to Use

Dosage

Usually, adults start with 5 mg once a day. Your doctor might increase this to 10 mg. For children and adolescents (6-17 years), the usual starting dose is 2.5 mg once a day.

Method

Take the tablet with a glass of water at the same time each day, with or without food. Do not drink grapefruit juice with this medicine.

Important

For adults, the maximum dose is 10 mg per day. For children and adolescents, the maximum dose is 5 mg per day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Swelling (e.g., in ankles)
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Sleepiness (especially at the start of treatment)
  • Feeling your heart beat fast (palpitations)
  • Flushing (warmth and redness of the face)
  • Stomach pain, feeling sick (nausea)
  • Changes in bowel habits (diarrhea or constipation)
  • Tiredness, weakness
  • Vision problems, double vision
  • Muscle cramps
RARE
  • Mood changes, anxiety, depression, trouble sleeping
  • Shaking (tremor), changes in taste, fainting
  • Numbness or tingling in arms and legs, not feeling pain
  • Ringing in ears (tinnitus)
  • Low blood pressure
  • Sneezing or runny nose due to inflammation
  • Cough
  • Dry mouth, vomiting
  • Hair loss, increased sweating, itchy skin, red spots on skin, skin discoloration
  • Urination problems, increased need to urinate at night, frequent urination
  • Impotence, discomfort or enlargement of male breasts
  • Pain, feeling unwell, joint or muscle pain, back pain
  • Weight gain or loss
  • Confusion
  • Severe allergic reactions (e.g., sudden wheezing, chest pain, shortness of breath, swelling of eyelids, face, lips, tongue, or throat making it hard to breathe; severe skin reactions with rash, hives, blistering, or peeling skin)
  • Heart attack, irregular heartbeat
  • Inflammation of the pancreas (severe stomach and back pain with feeling very unwell)
  • Reduced white blood cells or platelets (which can cause unusual bruising or bleeding)
  • High blood sugar (hyperglycemia)
  • Nerve disorder (weakness, tingling, numbness)
  • Swollen gums
  • Stomach bloating (gastritis)
  • Liver problems (inflammation of the liver, yellowing of skin/eyes, abnormal liver enzyme levels)
  • Increased muscle stiffness
  • Blood vessel inflammation (often with a rash)
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Disorders with stiffness, shaking, and/or movement problems (including Parkinson-like symptoms such as stiff posture, expressionless face, slow movements, or an unbalanced walk)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to amlodipine or any other ingredient in this medicine, or to other calcium channel blockers.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have very low blood pressure.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have certain severe heart problems, such as a narrowed heart valve, shock (when your heart cannot pump enough blood), or heart failure after a heart attack.
  • Do not eat grapefruit or drink grapefruit juice with this medicine, as it can increase the amount of medicine in your blood and lead to unpredictable effects.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category A

Suitable for older adults. Significant adverse effects include ankle oedema and orthostatic hypotension. Consider potential interactions. Avoid grapefruit. (updated 17.2.2025)
