How to Use

Dosage

The usual starting dose is 5 mg once a day. Your doctor may increase the dose to 10 mg once a day.

Method

Take the medicine with water at the same time each day, with or without food. Do not drink grapefruit juice with this medicine.

Important

The maximum recommended daily dose for adults is 10 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Swelling (fluid retention in the body).
  • Headache, dizziness, drowsiness (especially at the start of treatment).
  • Fast heartbeat, flushing (redness of the face).
  • Stomach pain, feeling sick (nausea).
  • Changes in bowel habits (diarrhoea, constipation, indigestion).
  • Tiredness, weakness.
  • Vision problems, double vision.
  • Muscle cramps.
  • Swollen ankles.
RARE
  • Mood changes, anxiety, depression, sleeplessness.
  • Tremor, changes in taste, fainting.
  • Numbness or tingling in arms and legs, loss of pain sensation.
  • Ringing in the ears (tinnitus).
  • Low blood pressure.
  • Sneezing or runny nose due to inflamed nasal lining.
  • Cough.
  • Dry mouth, vomiting.
  • Hair loss, increased sweating, itchy skin, red patches on skin, skin discoloration.
  • Trouble urinating, increased need to urinate at night, increased frequency of urination.
  • Impotence, discomfort or enlargement of breasts in men.
  • Pain, feeling unwell.
  • Joint or muscle pain, back pain.
  • Weight gain or loss.
  • Confusion.
  • Decrease in white blood cells or platelets, which can lead to easy bruising or bleeding.
  • High blood sugar (hyperglycaemia).
  • Nerve disorder that may cause muscle weakness, tingling, or numbness.
  • Swollen gums.
  • Swollen abdomen (gastritis).
  • Abnormal liver function, liver inflammation (hepatitis), yellow skin (jaundice), increased liver enzymes.
  • Increased muscle tension.
  • Inflammation of blood vessels, often with a skin rash.
  • Sensitivity to light.
  • Conditions with stiffness, tremor, and/or movement disorders (Parkinson-like symptoms).
  • Sudden wheezing, chest pain, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing.
  • Swelling of eyelids, face or lips.
  • Swelling of the tongue and throat causing severe breathing difficulties.
  • Severe skin reactions, including intense rash, hives, redness all over the body, severe itching, blistering, peeling and swelling of the skin, inflammation of mucous membranes (Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis) or other allergic reactions.
  • Heart attack, abnormal heart rhythm (pulse).
  • Inflammation of the pancreas, which can cause severe stomach and back pain and feeling very unwell.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to amlodipine, any other ingredient in this medicine, or to other calcium channel blockers.
  • Do not take if you have very low blood pressure.
  • Do not take if you have severe narrowing of the heart's main artery (aortic stenosis), if your heart cannot pump enough blood to your body (cardiogenic shock), or if you have heart failure after a heart attack.
  • Do not eat grapefruit or drink grapefruit juice while taking this medicine, as it can increase the effect of amlodipine.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have had a heart attack recently or have heart failure.

Category A
