How to Use

Dosage

The typical dose for adults is 25 mg, taken twice a day, or 10-25 mg in the evening for nerve pain/headache prevention.

Method

You can take the medicine with or without food. Swallow the tablets whole with water; do not chew them.

Important

The maximum daily dose for adults is usually 150 mg, but your doctor will decide the right dose for you.

  • Feeling sleepy or drowsy
  • Dry mouth
  • Dizziness
  • Headache
  • Constipation
  • Fast or irregular heartbeat
  • Nausea
  • Shaking in hands or other body parts
RARE
  • Seizures
  • Skin rash or hives
  • Yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice)
  • Severe constipation, swollen stomach, fever, and vomiting (signs of a blocked bowel)
  • Sudden blurred vision, colored halos around lights, or eye pain (signs of acute glaucoma)
  • Unusual bleeding or bruising, pale skin, or a long-lasting sore throat with fever (signs of blood problems)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to amitriptyline or any other ingredients in the medicine.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have recently had a heart attack or have other heart problems like irregular heartbeat, heart block, or coronary artery disease.
  • Do not take this medicine if you are currently taking MAOI medicines (monoamine oxidase inhibitors) or have taken them in the last 14 days.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have severe liver disease.
  • This medicine should not be given to children under 6 years of age.

  • If you are feeling depressed, you may sometimes think about harming yourself or taking your own life. These thoughts can become more common when you start antidepressant medicines.
  • Avoid alcohol while taking this medicine, as it can make you feel more drowsy.
  • This medicine can make you feel sleepy or dizzy, especially at the start of treatment. Do not drive or operate machinery if you experience these symptoms.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. Anticholinergic. Sedative. Serotonergic. Risk of QT prolongation. Significant adverse effects include confusion, cognitive impairment, arrhythmias and orthostatic hypotension. Increases risk of falls. Consider the numerous potential interactions.
