How to Use
Dosage
The usual dose is 3–5 mg per kilogram of body weight once a day.
Method
This medicine is always given as an intravenous infusion (a drip) in a hospital by a doctor or nurse, usually over 30–60 minutes.
Important
The maximum daily dose can be up to 10 mg per kilogram of body weight in certain cases.
Possible Side Effects
COMMON
- •Feeling tired or confused, or having muscle weakness or cramps due to low potassium levels in the blood.
- •Feeling sick (nausea) or vomiting.
- •Fever, chills, or shivering.
- •Feeling tired or confused, or having muscle weakness or cramps due to low levels of magnesium, calcium, or sodium in the blood.
- •High blood sugar levels.
- •High blood potassium levels.
- •Headache.
- •Faster than usual heartbeat.
- •Widening of blood vessels, low blood pressure, and redness.
- •Shortness of breath.
- •Diarrhea, stomach pain.
- •Abnormal results in liver or kidney function tests (seen in blood or urine tests).
- •Rash.
- •Chest or back pain.
RARE
- •Bleeding under the skin, unexplained bruises, and prolonged bleeding after an injury.
- •Severe allergic-like reaction.
- •Convulsions (seizures).
- •Breathing difficulties, possibly with wheezing.
Important Warnings
- If you are allergic to amphotericin B or any other ingredient in this medicine.
- If you have had a severe allergic reaction to AmBisome liposomal before.
- This medicine can affect your kidneys, so your doctor will check your kidney function with blood tests.
- Your doctor will monitor your blood potassium levels, as this medicine can change them.
- If you are diabetic, be aware that each vial contains sugar (sucrose).
