How to Use

Dosage

The usual dose is 160 micrograms once a day. For some, 80 micrograms once a day is enough.

Method

Inhale the medicine through your mouth into your lungs, usually in the morning or evening, one or two puffs once a day. Use it regularly every day, even if you feel well.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 640 micrograms, split into two doses (320 micrograms twice a day).

Possible Side Effects

RARE
  • Hoarseness
  • Irritation, burning, or inflammation in the mouth or throat
  • Fungal infection in the mouth (thrush)
  • Headache
  • Bad taste in mouth
  • Dry mouth or throat
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Heart palpitations
  • Stomach upset or stomach pain
  • High blood pressure
  • Sleep problems, depression, anxiety, restlessness, nervousness, hyperactivity, or irritability (more common in children)
  • Blurry vision or cataracts
  • Increased eye pressure (glaucoma)
  • Slowed growth in children and adolescents
  • Bone thinning
  • Cushing's syndrome-like symptoms (e.g., moon-shaped face, weight gain in the upper body, and thinning arms and legs)

Important Warnings

  • Do not use this medicine for sudden asthma attacks. Use your separate fast-acting asthma reliever for those.
  • Do not use if you are allergic to ciclesonide or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Tell your doctor if you have or have had tuberculosis (TB) or a fungal, viral, or bacterial infection in your lungs.
  • If your breathing gets worse or your asthma symptoms get worse during treatment, such as coughing, shortness of breath, or wheezing, or if your fast-acting asthma reliever doesn't help, contact your doctor immediately.
  • Contact your doctor if your vision becomes blurry or you have other vision problems.

  • Tell your doctor if you are taking other medicines, especially those for fungal or viral infections (like ketoconazole, itraconazole, ritonavir, nelfinavir), as they can increase Alvesco's side effects.
