How to Use

Dosage

The usual starting dose is 0.5 mg once daily. The typical treatment dose is 0.5–3 mg per day, taken as a single dose or divided into two doses. For elderly or frail patients, the maximum daily dose should not exceed 0.5–1 mg.

Method

Swallow the prolonged-release tablet whole with water. Do not divide or crush it.

Important

  • Excessive high mood (mania or hypomania)

  • Feeling drunk-like
  • Muscle weakness
  • Incontinence
  • Irregular periods
  • Overproduction of the hormone prolactin

  • Nervous system imbalance (e.g., palpitations, increased salivation, nasal congestion)
  • Decreased alertness
  • Twisting or jerky movements (dystonia)

  • Liver inflammation (hepatitis)
  • Abnormal liver function
  • Skin reaction due to sun sensitivity
  • Difficulty urinating
  • Swelling caused by fluid retention (peripheral edema)
  • Increased pressure in the eye

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to alprazolam, other benzodiazepines, or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you have myasthenia gravis (a muscle weakening disease).
  • Do not take if you have severe breathing problems, sleep apnea (breathing stops during sleep), or severe liver problems.
  • Tell your doctor if the medicine's effect lessens after a few weeks or if you are worried about becoming dependent on it.
  • Tell your doctor if you have a history of alcohol, drug, or substance abuse.

  • Be aware that memory loss can occur, usually several hours after taking the medicine.
  • Tell your doctor if you experience unusual reactions like restlessness, agitation, aggression, hallucinations, or behavioral changes, especially if you are elderly.
  • Use with caution if you have chronic lung disease, kidney or liver problems, a mental illness, or if you are elderly, as this medicine can cause excessive sedation or muscle weakness, increasing the risk of falls.
  • Avoid alcohol and talk to your doctor about other sedatives you are taking, as they can enhance the effect of Alprazolam Krka.
  • This medicine has a risk of abuse, which can lead to overdose and death. Keep it out of reach of others.
  • This medicine can increase the risk of hypomania or mania in patients with depression. It can also increase the risk of suicidal thoughts or actions. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of these symptoms or develop suicidal thoughts.
  • Do not stop taking this medicine suddenly, as it can cause withdrawal symptoms like headache, muscle pain, severe anxiety, confusion, or seizures. The dose must be reduced gradually under medical supervision.
  • Do not use during pregnancy unless strictly necessary and advised by your doctor, as it may harm the unborn baby. Do not breastfeed while using this medicine.
  • Do not drive or operate machinery while taking this medicine, as it can cause drowsiness and affect your ability to concentrate.
  • Using Alprazolam Krka with opioid medicines can be life-threatening, increasing the risk of drowsiness, breathing problems, and coma.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. Sedative. A long-acting. Increases the risk of drug addiction, cognitive disorder and traffic accidents. Increases risk of falls. Paradoxically, may increase anxiety, restlessness and aggression. (updated 15.1.2024)
