How to Use

Dosage

The usual starting dose is 0.5 mg once a day. The treatment dose is usually 0.5–3 mg per day, taken as a single dose or split into two doses.

Method

Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water. Do not break or crush it.

Important

Do not take more than 3 mg in one day, unless your doctor tells you otherwise. Elderly or frail patients should not take more than 0.5-1 mg per day.

  • Angry or hostile behavior
  • Strange or unusual thoughts
  • Being too active
  • Problems with heart rate, sweating, or stuffy nose
  • Feeling less alert
  • Twisting or jerking movements
  • Stomach or gut problems
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Liver inflammation
  • Liver not working well
  • Skin reaction to sunlight
  • Difficulty emptying the bladder
  • Swelling, especially in legs or arms
  • High pressure inside the eye

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to alprazolam, other similar medicines (benzodiazepines), or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have myasthenia gravis, a condition causing muscle weakness.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have severe breathing problems or sleep apnea (breathing stops while sleeping).
  • Do not take this medicine if you have severe liver problems.
  • Be careful if you are worried about dependence on this medicine or if you have abused alcohol, drugs, or other substances. Do not stop taking the medicine suddenly.

  • Tell your doctor if you have a history of memory problems.
  • Talk to your doctor if you experience unexpected reactions like restlessness, aggression, or hallucinations.
  • Be cautious if you are elderly, as this medicine can cause muscle weakness and falls.
  • Discuss with your doctor if you have depression or suicidal thoughts, or a history of mania or hypomania. Seek immediate medical help if you have thoughts of harming yourself.
  • Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, unless your doctor says it's absolutely necessary.
  • Do not drive or operate machines, as this medicine can make you sleepy and affect your ability to concentrate.
  • Do not drink alcohol while taking this medicine.
  • Tell your doctor about all other medicines you are taking.
  • Contact a doctor immediately if you experience symptoms like swelling of the face, tongue or throat, difficulty swallowing, hives, and breathing difficulties.
  • Contact a doctor immediately if your skin or the whites of your eyes turn yellow.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. Sedative. A long-acting. Increases the risk of drug addiction, cognitive disorder and traffic accidents. Increases risk of falls. Paradoxically, may increase anxiety, restlessness and aggression. (updated 15.1.2024)
