How to Use

Dosage

Usually, the starting dose is 0.25-0.5 mg three times a day. Your doctor may gradually increase the dose. Elderly or sensitive patients usually start with 0.25 mg 2-3 times a day.

Method

Take the tablets by mouth with some liquid, such as half a glass of water. The tablets can be divided into equal doses.

Important

The maximum daily dose is usually 3-4 mg, and treatment should not last longer than 2-4 weeks.

RARE
  • Feeling overly excited or unusual behavior
  • Seeing or hearing things that are not real (hallucinations)
  • Feeling agitated, angry, or hostile
  • Vomiting
  • Muscle cramps or weakness
  • Loss of bladder control (incontinence)
  • Cramping pain in lower back and thighs (may indicate menstrual problems)
  • Drug dependence
  • Drug withdrawal symptoms
  • Irregular periods (in women) or too much prolactin (a hormone)
  • Abnormal thoughts
  • Twisting or jerking movements (dystonia)
  • Hyperactivity
  • Stomach discomfort
  • Liver problems (shown in blood tests), liver inflammation
  • Nervous system problems (e.g., fast heart rate, unstable blood pressure, dizziness, fainting)
  • Severe allergic reaction with swelling of face or throat
  • Swelling of ankles, feet, or fingers
  • Skin reaction due to sun sensitivity
  • Difficulty urinating or bladder control problems
  • Increased eye pressure (can affect vision)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to alprazolam, other benzodiazepines, or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you have myasthenia gravis (a condition causing severe muscle weakness).
  • Do not take if you have severe chest problems or breathing difficulties (e.g., chronic bronchitis or emphysema).
  • Do not take if you have sleep apnea (breathing stops during sleep).
  • Do not take if you have severe liver problems.

  • Tell your doctor if you have a history of alcohol or drug abuse.
  • Using this medicine with strong pain relievers (opioids) can cause severe drowsiness, breathing problems, or coma, which can be life-threatening.
  • If you are elderly, be careful as this medicine can cause tiredness and muscle weakness, increasing the risk of falls.
  • This medicine is not for children or adolescents under 18 years old.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. Sedative. A long-acting. Increases the risk of drug addiction, cognitive disorder and traffic accidents. Increases risk of falls. Paradoxically, may increase anxiety, restlessness and aggression. (updated 15.1.2024)
