How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will tell you your exact dose. Typically, adults, teenagers (15-18), and elderly start with 100-300 mg daily. The maintenance dose can range from 100-900 mg daily, adjusted by your doctor. Children under 15 usually take 100-400 mg daily (only 100mg tablets).

Method

Take the tablets with water after a meal. You can split the tablets if needed. Drink plenty of fluids while taking this medicine.

Important

The maximum daily dose is usually 900 mg. However, if you have severe kidney problems, your doctor might prescribe less than 100 mg daily, or even 100 mg every other day. For dialysis patients, 300-400 mg is taken right after dialysis.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Skin rashes
  • Increased thyroid hormone levels in your blood
  • Nausea, vomiting (sometimes with blood), or diarrhea
  • Itchy skin rash
  • Higher liver test results
RARE
  • Flu-like symptoms (fever, chills, headache, muscle pain, general unwell feeling)
  • Severe skin reactions like peeling skin, blisters, or sores in mouth, throat, nose, or genitals, with red or swollen eyes
  • Swelling of face, hands, lips, tongue, or throat; difficulty swallowing or breathing, or sudden wheezing/chest tightness
  • Painful, swollen joints or swollen glands in your groin, armpits, or neck
  • Yellow skin or eyes (jaundice)
  • Problems with your liver or kidneys
  • Kidney stones, shown by blood in your urine, or pain in your stomach, side, or groin
  • Blood in your urine or unusual changes in bowel habits
  • High fat levels in your blood
  • General weakness, numbness, or tingling; feeling unsteady, or being unable to move muscles (paralysis); seizures or depression
  • Headache, dizziness, drowsiness, or vision problems (like cataracts)
  • Chest pain, high blood pressure, or a slow heartbeat
  • Swelling from fluid buildup, especially in your ankles
  • Male fertility issues, such as trouble with erections or "wet dreams"
  • Breast enlargement in both men and women
  • Changes in taste, mouth sores, small red skin bumps, hair loss or changes in hair color
  • Feeling very thirsty, tired, and losing weight (which could be signs of diabetes)
  • Brain inflammation (meningitis), causing neck stiffness, headache, nausea, fever, or confusion
  • Easy bruising or bleeding, or signs of infection like a sore throat (especially if you have liver or kidney problems)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to allopurinol or any other ingredient.
  • Do not take this medicine if you currently have or recently had a gout attack.
  • Tell your doctor if you have liver, kidney, heart problems, high blood pressure, or thyroid problems, as your dose may need adjustment.
  • Stop taking this medicine and call your doctor right away if you get a severe skin rash with symptoms like fever, swollen glands, joint pain, or peeling skin, as this can be a very serious allergic reaction.
  • This medicine is not recommended if you are breastfeeding.
