How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will start you on a low dose, usually 100-300 mg per day, and may increase it as needed. For children under 15, the dose is 10-20 mg/kg per day.

Method

Take the tablets by mouth with a glass of water, preferably after a meal to reduce stomach upset.

Important

The maximum daily dose for adults is 900 mg. For children under 15, the maximum daily dose is 400 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Rash
  • Increased levels of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) in blood
  • Nausea, vomiting
  • Abnormal liver function tests
  • Diarrhea
RARE
  • Liver problems, such as hepatitis
  • High body temperature
  • Blood in urine (hematuria)
  • High cholesterol levels in blood (hyperlipidemia)
  • General feeling of being unwell or weak
  • Weakness, numbness, shaky legs, inability to move muscles (paralysis), or loss of consciousness; headache, dizziness, drowsiness, or vision problems
  • Chest pain (angina pectoris), high blood pressure, or slow heart rate
  • Fluid retention and swelling (edema), especially in the ankles
  • Glucose metabolism disorders (diabetes), your doctor may check your blood sugar levels
  • Changes in blood quality (easier bruising, sore throat, or signs of infection)
  • Effects on lymph nodes
  • Male infertility, impotence, or breast enlargement in both men and women
  • Changes in bowel habits
  • Taste changes
  • Cataracts
  • Hair loss or hair discoloration
  • Depression
  • Problems with muscle coordination (ataxia)
  • Tingling, prickling, or burning sensation on the skin (paresthesia)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to allopurinol or any other ingredients.
  • Tell your doctor if you have or have had liver, kidney, heart problems, high blood pressure, or thyroid problems.
  • Do not take Allopurinol Accord during an acute gout attack.
  • Stop taking this medicine immediately and contact your doctor if you develop a skin rash, especially if you are of Han Chinese, Thai, or Korean origin, as this medicine can cause severe skin reactions.
  • If you have kidney stones, this medicine might make them smaller, which could cause them to move and block your urinary tract.

  • If you have cancer or Lesch-Nyhan syndrome, drink plenty of fluids to dilute your urine, as uric acid levels in your blood may increase.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C
