How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will usually start you on a low dose, such as 100 mg per day, and adjust it as needed. For mild conditions: 100-200 mg per day. For moderate conditions: 300-600 mg per day. For severe conditions: 700-900 mg per day. For children, the usual dose is 10-20 mg per kg of body weight daily, divided into 3 doses.

Method

Swallow the tablets whole, preferably with a glass of water, after meals. Drink plenty of water (2-3 liters) daily while taking this medicine.

Important

The maximum daily dose for adults can be up to 900 mg. For children, the maximum daily dose is 400 mg.

Possible Side Effects

  • increased thyroid hormone levels in the blood

  • abnormal liver test results
  • diarrhea
  • liver problems, such as liver inflammation
  • easy bruising or bleeding
  • sore throat or other signs of infection
  • high levels of urea in the blood
  • effects on lymph nodes
  • fever
  • blood in urine
  • high cholesterol levels in the blood
  • general feeling of being unwell or weak
  • weakness, numbness, unsteadiness, or inability to move muscles (paralysis) or loss of consciousness
  • lack of muscle coordination
  • tingling, prickling, or burning sensation in the skin
  • headache, dizziness, drowsiness, or vision problems
  • chest pain, high blood pressure, or slow heart rate
  • male infertility or erectile dysfunction
  • breast enlargement in both men and women
  • changes in bowel function, fatty stools
  • vomiting blood
  • changes in taste, mouth inflammation
  • cataracts (clouding of the eye lens)
  • boils on the skin
  • hair loss or changes in hair color
  • seizures
  • depression
  • fluid buildup and swelling (edema), especially in the ankles
  • abnormal blood sugar metabolism (diabetes)
  • aseptic meningitis (inflammation of the membranes around the brain and spinal cord)
  • lichenoid skin rash (itchy red-purple rash and/or white-grey lines on mucous membranes)

Important Warnings

  • Do not use Allonol if you are allergic to allopurinol or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Tell your doctor if you have liver or kidney problems, heart problems, high blood pressure, thyroid issues, or if you are taking diuretics or ACE inhibitors.
  • Do not take this medicine if you currently have a gout attack.
  • If you are of Han Chinese, Thai, or Korean origin, inform your doctor, as you might have a higher risk of severe skin reactions.
  • Stop taking Allonol and contact your doctor immediately if you develop a rash or other severe skin problems, such as sores in your mouth, throat, nose, or eyes, or peeling skin.

  • Gout patients should avoid taking medicines with acetylsalicylic acid for fever or pain.
  • This medicine can cause dizziness or drowsiness and affect your coordination. Do not drive or operate machinery if you experience these effects.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Consider potential interactions. (updated 16.9.2024)
