How to Use

Dosage

Start with 0.25-0.5 micrograms once daily. Your doctor may adjust the dose based on blood tests, potentially increasing it to 0.25-1 microgram, or 3-5 micrograms if your calcium levels are very low.

Method

Take by mouth. Do not chew or crush the capsule.

Important

Your doctor will determine your maximum daily dose; generally, do not exceed 5 micrograms per day unless specifically instructed by your doctor.

  • Calcification (hard lumps on the skin due to calcium deposits)
  • Kidney stones (severe lower back pain)
  • Calcium deposits in the kidneys (nephrocalcinosis)
  • Dizziness
  • Reduced need to urinate (sign of kidney problems)
  • Swelling in any part of the body (sign of kidney problems)
  • Fever with pain in the side of your body (sign of kidney problems)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to alfacalcidol, peanuts, soy, or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you have high calcium levels in your blood (hypercalcemia), which can cause tiredness, nausea, vomiting, frequent urination, and headache.
  • Do not take if you have symptoms of vitamin D poisoning.
  • Do not take if you have high phosphate levels (unless caused by parathyroid problems) or high magnesium levels in your blood.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have kidney problems, including kidney stones.

  • Tell your doctor if you have granuloma or sarcoidosis, as you might be more sensitive to this medicine.
  • Inform your doctor if you have atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries).
  • Your blood calcium or phosphate levels can become too high while taking this medicine; your doctor will monitor this.
  • Consult your doctor if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning a pregnancy.
