How to Use

Dosage

The usual starting dose for adults and children over 6 years (and over 20 kg) is 0.25-0.5 micrograms once a day. For very low calcium levels, your doctor might prescribe 3-5 micrograms per day.

Method

Take capsules by mouth. Do not chew or crush the capsules.

Important

Do not take more than 1 microgram per day, unless your doctor has specifically prescribed 3-5 micrograms for very low calcium levels.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Stomach or gut pain or discomfort
  • Skin rash
  • High calcium in urine (hypercalciuria), which can cause painful, frequent, or sudden urination and stomach pain
  • Itching
  • High calcium in blood (hypercalcaemia)
  • High phosphate in blood (hyperphosphatemia)
RARE
  • Difficulty breathing (sign of a serious allergic reaction)
  • Swelling of the face or throat (sign of a serious allergic reaction)
  • Severe skin rash (sign of a serious allergic reaction)
  • Feeling weak, tired, or unwell, including bone or muscle pain (can be a sign of very high calcium/phosphate or kidney problems)
  • Feeling very thirsty
  • Nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhea, or loss of appetite (can be a sign of very high calcium/phosphate)
  • Urinating more often or less often than usual (can be a sign of very high calcium/phosphate or kidney problems)
  • Headache
  • Confusion or drowsiness
  • Dry mouth or a metallic taste in your mouth
  • Sweating a lot
  • Swelling in different parts of the body (sign of kidney problems)
  • Fever with pain on the side of your body (sign of kidney problems)
  • Kidney stones (can cause sharp cramping pain in your lower back)
  • Calcinosis (hard, pimple-like bumps or nodules on the skin due to calcium deposits)
  • Nephrocalcinosis (calcium deposits in the kidneys)
  • Dizziness

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to alfacalcidol, peanuts, soy, or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you have symptoms of too much vitamin D in your body.
  • Do not take if you have high calcium levels in your blood (hypercalcaemia), which can cause tiredness, nausea, vomiting, frequent urination, and headache.
  • Do not take if you have high phosphate levels in your blood (hyperphosphatemia), unless caused by parathyroid issues, or high magnesium levels in your blood (hypermagnesemia).
  • Always tell your doctor or pharmacist about all other medicines you are taking, especially other vitamin D products or calcium supplements, as this medicine can affect how they work.

  • Tell your doctor if you have kidney problems, including kidney stones.
  • Tell your doctor if you have granuloma or sarcoidosis, as you might be more sensitive to alfacalcidol.
  • Tell your doctor if you have atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries).
  • Your blood calcium or phosphate levels can become too high while taking this medicine. Your doctor will monitor this with blood tests.
