How to Use

Dosage

One 70 mg dose (100 ml) once a week.

Method

Take one full bottle (100 ml) with at least 30 ml of plain water first thing in the morning, before eating, drinking, or taking other medicines. Stay upright for at least 30 minutes after taking it and before your first meal. Do not lie down. Do not take with mineral water, coffee, tea, juice, or milk.

Important

This medication is taken once a week; a daily maximum dose is not applicable.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Heartburn, difficulty or pain when swallowing, ulcers in the esophagus (food pipe) which can cause chest pain, heartburn, or swallowing problems.
  • Bone, muscle, and/or joint pain, sometimes severe.
  • Stomach pain, upset stomach or burping after eating, indigestion, constipation, feeling full or bloated, diarrhea, gas.
  • Headache, dizziness, feeling of spinning (vertigo).
  • Swelling in joints, hands, or feet.
  • Itching, rash, skin redness, hair loss.
  • Tiredness, weakness, temporary flu-like symptoms (like muscle aches, general discomfort, sometimes fever), usually at the start of treatment.
  • Nausea, vomiting, irritation or inflammation of the esophagus or stomach.
RARE
  • Severe allergic reactions like hives, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, and/or throat, which may cause difficulty breathing or swallowing; severe skin reactions.
  • Pain in the mouth and/or jaw, swelling or sores in the mouth, numbness or a heavy feeling in the jaw, or loose teeth, which can be signs of jaw bone damage (osteonecrosis), especially after tooth removal or with cancer treatment.
  • Unusual fractures of the thigh bone, especially in patients on long-term osteoporosis treatment. Contact your doctor if you experience pain, weakness, or discomfort in your thigh, hip, or groin.
  • Symptoms of low blood calcium, such as muscle cramps or spasms, and/or tingling in the fingers or around the mouth.
  • Stomach or small intestine ulcers (sometimes severe or with bleeding), narrowing of the esophagus.
  • Rash worsened by sunlight.
  • Black or tarry stools (sign of bleeding).
  • Blurred vision, eye pain or redness.
  • Taste changes.
  • Ear pain, discharge from the ear, and/or ear infection, which can be signs of bone damage in the ear.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to alendronate or any other ingredient.
  • Do not take if you have certain problems with your esophagus (the tube connecting your mouth to your stomach), such as narrowing or difficulty swallowing.
  • Do not take if your doctor has told you that your blood calcium level is low.
  • Do not take if you cannot stand or sit upright for at least 30 minutes after taking the medicine.
  • This medicine is not for children or young people under 18 years old.

  • Contact your doctor right away if you get chest pain, difficulty or pain when swallowing, or new or worsening heartburn.
