How to Use

Dosage

One 70 mg tablet once a week.

Method

Take the tablet whole with a large glass of plain water in the morning before food or other medicines. Do not chew or let it dissolve in your mouth. Stay upright (sitting, standing, or walking) for at least 30 minutes after taking the tablet and until you have had your first meal. Do not take it at bedtime.

Important

A maximum of one 70 mg tablet once a week on your chosen day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Bone, muscle, and/or joint pain, which can sometimes be severe.
  • Heartburn, difficulty or pain when swallowing, esophageal ulcers.
  • Headache.
  • Dizziness.
  • Vertigo.
  • Abdominal pain.
  • Uncomfortable feeling in the stomach or burping after eating.
  • Constipation.
  • Feeling of fullness or bloating in the stomach.
  • Diarrhea.
  • Flatulence.
  • Swollen joints.
  • Hair loss.
  • Itching.
  • Fatigue.
  • Swelling of hands or feet.
RARE
  • Nausea, vomiting.
  • Irritation or inflammation of the esophagus or stomach.
  • Black or tarry stools.
  • Rash, skin redness.
  • Temporary flu-like symptoms such as muscle pain, general malaise, sometimes with fever, usually at the start of treatment.
  • Taste disturbance.
  • Blurred vision, eye pain or redness.
  • Allergic reactions such as hives, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, and/or throat, which may cause difficulty breathing or swallowing.
  • Severe skin reactions, such as a ring-shaped, red, and often blistering rash, accompanied by high fever.
  • Mouth and/or jaw pain, swelling or sores in the mouth, numbness or a heavy feeling in the jaw, or loose teeth (signs of jaw bone damage).
  • Unusual thigh bone fracture, especially with long-term osteoporosis treatment.
  • Esophageal narrowing.
  • Mouth sores if tablets are chewed or sucked.
  • Stomach or duodenal ulcers (sometimes severe or with bleeding).
  • Rash worsened by sunlight.
  • Symptoms of low blood calcium (muscle cramps/spasms, tingling in fingers or around the mouth).
  • Ear pain, ear infection, or ear discharge (signs of bone damage in the ear).

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to alendronic acid or any other ingredient.
  • Do not use if you have certain esophageal conditions (like narrowing or difficulty swallowing) or if you cannot stay upright for at least 30 minutes.
  • Do not use if your doctor has told you that your blood calcium level is too low.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have kidney disease, difficulty swallowing, or digestive problems.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have Barrett's esophagus (changes in the lower part of your esophagus).

  • Talk to your doctor or dentist if you have gum disease, poor dental health, or are scheduled for a tooth extraction. Good oral hygiene is important during treatment.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have cancer or are receiving cancer treatments (like chemotherapy or radiation therapy), or if you are taking certain medications (like angiogenesis inhibitors or corticosteroids).
  • Talk to your doctor if you smoke or have smoked, as this may increase the risk of dental problems.
  • Do not drink mineral water, coffee, tea, juice, or milk with the tablet; only plain water. Wait at least 30 minutes before eating or drinking anything else.
  • If you experience chest pain, heartburn, difficulty swallowing, or pain when swallowing, stop using the medication and contact your doctor immediately.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Do not use in severe renal impairment. The medicine must be taken with sufficient liquid and the patient should then remain in an upright position for 30 minutes. Iron, magnesium, aluminium and calcium decrease absorption.
