Acyrax is an antiviral medicine that stops the herpes virus from multiplying and is used by adults over 18 to treat recurring cold sores.

How to Use

Dosage

1 tablet 5 times a day

Method

Take with a glass of water, about every 4 hours during the day (not at night) for 5 days. Start treatment as soon as you feel the first symptoms.

Important

Do not exceed 5 tablets per day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Feeling sick (nausea) or being sick (vomiting)
  • Diarrhea
  • Stomach pain
  • Itching
  • Skin rash (including rash from sun exposure)
  • Tiredness
  • Fever
RARE
  • Hives (itchy rash)
  • Hair loss
  • Increased levels of urea and creatinine in the blood (showing kidney function changes)
  • Increased liver enzyme levels (bilirubin and liver enzymes)
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Low number of red blood cells (anemia)
  • Low number of white blood cells (leukopenia)
  • Low number of platelets (cells that help blood clot)
  • Agitation or confusion
  • Tremors or shaking
  • Unsteady walking and poor coordination
  • Speech problems
  • Seeing or hearing things that aren't there (hallucinations)
  • Difficulty thinking or understanding
  • Seizures
  • Unusual sleepiness or drowsiness
  • Brain disease (encephalopathy)
  • Unconsciousness (coma)
  • Liver inflammation, possibly with yellow skin and eyes (jaundice)
  • Pain in the lower back, near the kidneys (kidney pain, possibly with kidney failure)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take Acyrax if you are allergic to aciclovir, valaciclovir, or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Talk to a doctor or pharmacist before taking Acyrax if your immune system is weak (e.g., after a bone marrow transplant or if you have HIV).
  • Talk to a doctor or pharmacist if you have kidney problems.
  • Talk to a doctor or pharmacist if you are over 65 years old.
  • Contact a doctor if your cold sore is severe, widespread, or gets worse.

  • Cold sores are contagious. To avoid spreading the virus, do not let others touch the infected area or use your towel. Wash your hands after touching the cold sore and avoid touching other parts of your body, especially your eyes.
  • Not for use by children under 18 years old without a doctor's prescription.
  • Stop taking Acyrax and get medical help immediately if you have signs of a severe allergic reaction like fast-spreading hives, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or other body parts, shortness of breath, wheezing, breathing difficulties, or fainting.
