How to Use

Dosage

For herpes infections, the typical dose is 200 mg, taken five times a day, about every 4 hours, for five days, skipping the night dose. Your doctor will tell you the exact dose.

Method

Take the tablets with a glass of water or other liquid.

Important

Do not take more than 1600 mg in a single day, unless your doctor tells you otherwise. Drink plenty of fluids during treatment.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Feeling confused
  • Seeing or hearing things that are not there (hallucinations)
  • Headache, feeling dizzy, or sleepy
  • Feeling sick (nausea)
  • Being sick (vomiting)
  • Diarrhea
  • Stomach ache
  • Itching
  • Skin rash (including sensitivity to light)
  • Tiredness, fatigue, or fever
RARE
  • Trouble sleeping (insomnia)
  • Hives (itchy rash)
  • Hair loss
  • Severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis), which can cause swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat and make it hard to breathe. Seek immediate medical help.
  • Shortness of breath
  • Changes in liver blood tests
  • Swelling of deeper skin layers (angioedema)
  • Changes in kidney blood tests
  • Changes in blood cell counts (e.g., anemia, low white blood cells, low platelets)
  • Feeling detached from reality, agitation, psychotic symptoms, tremors, clumsiness, speech problems, seizures, brain disease, or coma
  • Liver inflammation (hepatitis) or yellowing of the skin/eyes (jaundice)
  • Sudden kidney failure or kidney pain

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to aciclovir, valaciclovir, or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • If you have kidney problems or are elderly, your doctor may change your dose. You should also drink enough fluids during treatment.
  • Tell your doctor if you have a nervous system disease.
  • If you have genital herpes, avoid sexual contact until all sores and blisters are gone to prevent spreading the infection.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category A
